The more Alston talked, the more sense he thought he was making. He was even starting to feel noble.
“Alani, remember that childbirth documentary? All that blood and screaming! That’s what giving birth actually looks like! Women suffering through the worst pain imaginable.”
“It made me sick just watching it. How could I let you go through that?” Isn’t this better? Ella had the babies for us, and you get lovely twins without any pain.”
“You become a mom to two kids without suffering. That’s a good thing, so why are you angry?”
“So, you hook up with other woman, and I’m supposed to be grateful?”
“How can you not get it? I just can’t watch you suffer. I know Edward and Lynn are not warm to you now, but that’s only because Ella’s still alive.”
“She has cancer. She’ll be gone soon. After she dies, you’ll be their only mother. Give it time–they’ll
warm up to you.”
Alston’s fantasy sounded lovely, but reality would likely be far different.
Given the twins‘ dark personalities, they’d probably blame me for their mother’s death.
Those two little bastards won’t warm up to me–they most probably end up killing me!”
And I knew better than anyone that Ella didn’t have cancer at all.
“Stop lying to yourself. You know damn well Ella doesn’t have cancer.”
“For days, she’s been blowing you and screwing you–how the hell does a dying woman have the energy for that 24/7 sex?”
At this, Alston’s expression shifted. Clearly, he’d noticed something was off about Ella’s “illness” too.
But he didn’t want to admit it because it would make his affair indefensible.
“No… that can’t be right. I took her to get tested myself…”

Chapter 17
“Watching you lie like this makes me sick. I’m done talking. Get out, or I’m calling the police!”
“Alani, please, just listen-” Alston reached for my hand.
Before he could touch me, Ives’s fist connected with Alston’s face in a solid punch!
“I’ve heard enough. How can anyone be this shameless? Cheating is bad enough, but trying to spin it as some noble gesture?”
“You’re a disgrace, Wilson. How did I ever lose to someone as pathetic as you?”
