Chapter 5
Chapter 5
For a week, Nathan and I maintained this delicate dance of desire and restraint. He’d satisfy my needs when I wanted, but always stopped short of crossing that final line.
That night, I retreated to bed early, my mind still spinning with questions about the two brothers.
Around nine, Nathan’s phone rang.
Thinking I was asleep, he took the call in the living room. The bedroom door was cracked just enough.
“Brother.” Matthew’s voice carried that familiar arrogant drawl.
“I need you to handle something. Break up with Emma for me.”
Nathan remained silent.
Half his body sat in shadow, his tailored suit still pristine even at this hour.
The stark contrast between the twins had never been more apparent – one brother all calculated power, the other pure reckless charm.
“Come on, Nate. Victoria’s been crying all week.”
“Matthew,” Nathan’s voice held a cold edge I’d never heard before.
“How could you do this to Emma?”
“Do what? She was just a bit of fun, a way to make Victoria jealous. Now Vic’s upset, so obviously the little
plaything needs to go.”
“Get over here and apologize to her yourself. I won’t clean up your mess this time.”
“Brother dearest…” Matthew’s voice turned wheedling, manipulative.
“Think about the company. Think about our reputation.”
“What are you talking about?”
“What if sweet, devoted Emma threatens suicide? She’s obsessed with me. If she learns the truth about everything – the twins switch, the fortune, Victoria – and decides to jump off a building… who takes the
fall?”
“She’s not that kind of person.”

Chapter 5
“But what if? One tragic headline is all it takes. ‘Wealthy Heir’s Deception Leads to Tragedy Father would
never forgive us.”
Matthew’s voice stayed smooth as honey, poisonous as ever. “Just handle it, brother. You’re good at being the bad guy. I’ve got to go comfort Victoria…”
I was thoroughly engrossed in this twisted family drama when the bedroom door suddenly swung open.
Nathan filled the doorframe, his presence commanding the entire room.
His tall shadow fell across my face as those intense eyes found mine. “How much did you hear?”
The look on his face wasn’t of someone caught in a lie.
It was of someone who’d finally been set free.
