Chapter 6
At this point, the masks could finally fall away. I smiled and nodded.
“Every word.”
“You’re not surprised?”
“Not at all.”
“You knew.”
“Not long – just a week ago.”
Despite my casual act, Nathan had seen right through me. Of course he had. What else would you expect from someone who became a CEO before thirty?
My little tests and subtle changes hadn’t escaped those watchful eyes. Yet we’d both maintained this
dance for a week.
One wouldn’t ask, the other wouldn’t tell.
Until this phone call stripped away our last pretenses.
“I apologize for Matthew’s behavior.”
“Don’t. I was never that invested in him anyway.” Nathan’s eyes widened slightly at that.
Instead of pushing further, he switched to business mode.
“How much did he take from you? I’ll pay ten times that amount.”
“Sure, I’ll send my details.”
The payment notification came through instantly. Far more than ten times the amount.
But money wasn’t what I was after.
“Nathan, I have another request.”
“Yes?”
“Why don’t we give us a chance?”

He froze, his breath catching. Like he couldn’t trust his own ears.
I slowly slipped off my jacket, letting it fall to the floor. The dim light played across my skin, and I watched his eyes follow the shadows.
I couldn’t see his expression clearly, but the way his breath quickened told me everything.
“You should put that back on…‘
I wrapped my arms around his waist, pressing close.
“Stop deflecting.
Don’t you want to see where this could go?
Just you and me. No more pretending to be Matthew.”
His hands trembled slightly as they settled on my hips.
This time, there was no brother to hide behind.
No role to play.
Yes.
Just Nathan, and whatever this thing was between us.
His hands found my waist, hesitant but electric.
The perfect control he always maintained was cracking.
I could feel his heart racing against my palm. For once, the composed CEO was at a loss for words. And I intended to keep him that way.
