Chapter 15
Mr. Wilson looked like he’d seen a ghost. Even the driver couldn’t help stealing glances at me in the rearview mirror.
Well, if we were doing this… “You really went all out, didn’t you?” I said with biting sarcasm.
“Worth every penny if it turns into an engagement ring.”
“Nathan, have you lost your damn mind?”
Mr. Wilson shot me a horrified look that screamed ‘please don’t get us all fired.‘
But Nathan just laughed softly. “Maybe I have. But I can be patient. These past three months, I’ve been searching for you. Even after I found you, I held back, watched from a distance. This roundabout investment scheme was the only way I could think of to see you again. I hope you can forgive the manipulation.”
“I have nothing to say to you. Stop the car.” Nathan’s hand covered mine. “You might have nothing to say, but I do. I owe you an apology. I should have told you the truth from the beginning. That’s why I’m here – to explain everything.”
“Save your explanations.”
“Do you
hate me that much?”
“Yes.”
“But you once said you loved me most.”
“I was playing you. Isn’t that poetic justice for a liar?”
“Emma, there’s something I need to tell you. I’ve actually felt this way about you since-”
Nathan’s words were cut off by a sharp screech of brakes.
Our driver’s forehead was beaded with sweat.
“I’m sorry, sir, but I think I just saw…”
“Go on.”
“I believe I just saw your brother, Matthew.”
