Chapter 19

Skyler noticed my uneasiness and led me to the front of the memorial tablet. Then, I made a toast respectfully. “Sir Barton, I’m sorry for not being able to stay by your side and send you off on your final journey. I and Kaleb will definitely live together till old and grey, striving to give birth to your great–grandchildren as soon as possible. Let’s drink this together. May you rest in peace.”
I was never good at speaking sweet words, and I didn’t know how to please people. If it weren’t for Skyler reminding me, I would have embarrassed myself on such a serious occasion. Skyler saw that I was thin, and when I spoke, my voice was so light and ethereal, like a fairy. The scene touched Skyler, and tears welled up in her eyes. She sighed and said to me, “If Sir Barton were still alive, he would definitely not want to see you all so sad.” Hearing these words, many elders in the mourning hall also felt sadness in their hearts, and the sounds of sighs and cries echoed one after another. I also shed tears and then bowed deeply a few times. Tears fell, dampening the cushion under my knees. Kaleb stood in front of Logan’s coffin silently.
At dawn, the two of us were finally replaced by the villagers. I had no appetite, but Skyler forcibly gave me a bowl of cereals and advised me, “Sir Barton passed away peacefully. He didn’t die of some illness or something. You should be happy for him. Take care of yourself, okay?”
I held the bowl and looked at Kaleb, who had been standing all night. He didn’t eat, nor did he drink. No matter who persuaded him, he wouldn’t listen.
“I wonder where the others are now. Look at the time. Hope Sir Barton’s funeral won’t be delayed,” Skyler sighed. Hearing her words, I suddenly realized that among the immediate family members of this generation, only Kaleb and I had come. Neither Kaleb’s parents nor his uncle’s family were here.
At this time, a man complained in a reproachful tone, “You know Roy? Well, he said he was still playing cards on the high seas and wouldn’t be able to come back for a few more days. What an ungrateful young man. His grandpa raised him his whole life, but now, all he cares about is his game.”
Kaleb’s uncle, Jeffrey Barton, had two children. The younger one was a girl, Hana Barton. She was lively and mischievous. And she was a small internet celebrity who cared about her popularity very much. Jeffrey’s son, Roy Barton, was a complete playboy. He only enjoyed himself with feasting and other kinds of entertainment and never bothered with the family’s affairs.
