Chapter 20
But Roy was honey–tongued. So, Logan had only scolded him with a few words and never disliked him. When Logan was still alive, he loved his grandchildren very much. Every time they met, Logan would bring out delicious and fun treats to entertain them. But when Logan was gone, his usually well–behaved grandchildren quickly. revealed their true colors. The human heart was really unsearchable.
I suddenly sighed deeply. I thought to myself, *Even people with blood ties can be like this. After I divorce Kaleb, Kaleb will probably forget about me quickly as well. Maybe he’ll marry Annalise right after our divorce and live the truly happy life he desires. At that time, I’ll be alone again, without any support or companionship.*
With this thought in mind, I let out another long sigh.“Skyler, I…”
Just as I was about to ask Skyler some other rules of funeral arrangements, I was interrupted by a mournful cry at
the door.
“Sir Barton! How could you just leave so suddenly? No!”
The people in the mourning hall looked towards the door with confusion. “Who is that? Hana? She’s grown up so quickly all of a sudden?”
I was also startled and looked over. It wasn’t Hana, nor was it anyone from the Barton family. It was Annalise. She was wearing a white dress, and her eyes were red from crying. At this time, she stumbled out of the car, almost falling to the ground. But in the next second, Kaleb strode over and caught her steadily. Annalise threw herself into his arms, burying her face in his neck, crying very sadly.
“Kaleb, it’s all my fault. If I had come to see Sir Barton more often and talked to him, this wouldn’t have happened. It’s all my fault,” she sobbed.
Kaleb didn’t say anything, nor did he push Annalise away. He just silently patted her back, helping her catch her
breath.
“If it weren’t for you marrying Katrina first, maybe
We would have gotten married and even had children.” Annalise’s voice was very loud. “Sir Barton used to say that it would be great if I could become his granddaughter–in–law. But in the end, we didn’t make his wish come true.”
Kaleb spoke at this time with a hoarse voice, “Don’t talk
nonsense.”
I didn’t know which sentence he was responding to. I didn’t want to guess, nor did I dare to. I was afraid of getting that heartbreaking result again–that Kaleb had never loved me.
Annalise nestled in Kaleb’s arms while Kaleb slowly and gently patted her back. The two of them held each other tightly, looking as if they were a couple. The people present witnessed this scene and all glanced at me
sympathetically.
