Chapter 24
Meanwhile, I was like an isolated outsider, following behind Skyler and others. Logan’s body was sent to the funeral home for cremation, and his ashes were buried then. The day after the funeral, it started pouring heavily. “After Danna Barton was brought back from the hospital, she lay in bed resting, having no appetite at all. The air at home was filled with sadness and silence.
On the rectangular dining table, the Bartons and Annalise sat together to have a meal. In their eyes, I seemed insignificant. Apart from Danna, no one really paid attention to me. They chatted about some seemingly high–end topics, appearing noble and having a high opinion of themselves. I didn’t intend to please anyone. When Hana noticed that Kaleb had been silent all along, she deliberately brought up a topic, asking, “Kaleb, can I ride in your car back to the city?”
Kaleb looked up at her, his eyes slightly darkened. Annalise hurriedly interrupted, “Kaleb, I also wanna ride in your, car back to the city.”
Kaleb didn’t say anything, his Adam’s apple bobbed slightly. Then, he responded softly,“Hmm.”
Roy, sitting across from me, raised an eyebrow and gazed at me, his eyes unabashedly revealing admiration. He unconsciously licked the corner of his mouth and then chuckled like a playboy, “Katrina, would you like to take my car? I can drive you home.”
My movements froze for a moment, and I looked up at Roy. Roy’s smile deepened, and his gaze fixed on my beautiful and captivating face.
After dinner, Jeffrey’s wife, Tanya Duffy, went to wash dishes in the kitchen. I didn’t want to stay in the living room, so I voluntarily went into the kitchen to help. Although Tanya was virtuous, she also looked down on me, a poor girl who came out of the mountains. Tanya had a strong family background and felt that I was not worthy of marrying into the Barton family.
“Do the rest of the cleaning yourself.” After Tanya said so coldly, she left the kitchen.
I didn’t care. I just wanted to find a space to be alone, not wanting to face my husband’s family members who didn’t like me. I didn’t want to sit in the corner, feeling restrained and awkward.
After I finished washing up, I cleaned my hands and turned around to leave. But suddenly, a tall figure blocked my way. I was startled and subconsciously stepped back, my back hitting against the stove. My heart began to pound rapidly, and my breathing became erratic.
Roy placed one hand on the stove, lowered his head, and leaned over me, squinting his mischievous cold eyes.
