I felt guilty and immediately changed the subject. “Have the new batch of experimental monkeys been bought?” Giana sat across from me, resting her chin on her hands, feeling exhausted. “I bought them with all my savings. I just went to the finance department for reimbursement, and she said that the payments from several distributors haven’t arrived yet. The company is keeping the money to pay salaries first. She told me to wait until the payments arrive before seeking reimbursement.”
I patted her shoulder, smiling reassuringly.“I’ll give you double the year–end bonus.”
Giana raised an eyebrow and jokingly said, “Did you learn this from your husband? Are you now promising big things to the employees?”
The smile on my face gradually disappeared. I felt exhausted. “Can we not mention him?”
“Did you fight?” Giana asked with a serious face. Then she muttered, “It shouldn’t be. With your current relationship, you hardly exchange a few words throughout the year. You couldn’t even start a fight!” “Who are you looking down upon?” I wondered.
I wanted to say something, but the words got stuck in my throat, and finally, I remained silent. I had to admit that what Giana said was true.
At that moment, someone knocked on the door. Giana turned around. I raised my gaze and looked towards the door, thinking it was the finance department or a sales representative. I softly said, “Please come in.”
The door was pushed open, and Annalise’s heavily made–up face was filled with a fake smile. She walked in slowly, wearing a gorgeous red dress that outlined her graceful and voluptuous figure. “Mrs. Barton, I didn’t expect your research institute to be so hard to find!”
My eyes darkened. Giana’s face changed suddenly, and she crossed her arms, her tone extremely aggressive. “What are you here for?”
Annalise smiled at Giana, showing her kindness. “I came to find Mrs. Barton.”
Although I didn’t like this woman, I was well–mannered and good–tempered. “Ms. Perez, is there something you need from me?”
