Chapter 40
It was a stormy and gloomy day with strong winds and heavy rain. The visibility was very low. Kaleb tightly gripped the steering wheel, focused on driving, and curiously asked, “How did you end up having coffee near my house?”
Annalise’s eyes flickered as she looked out of the window. “I have a friend. She lives nearby. She had a breakup, and I stayed with her all night last night. I was feeling so tired and thought of having a cup of coffee, but I didn’t expect it to rain so heavily.”
Kaleb wasn’t interested and didn’t ask further. Annalise turned to look at him.“I heard from your assistant that you are flying to Australia tomorrow morning?”
Kaleb said in a cold tone, “Stop prying into my affairs.”
Annalise, with an arrogant attitude, leaned towards him, resting her elbow on the partition and supporting her chin with one hand. “What a coincidence. I booked the same flight and the same hotel as you, but I’m going there for a vacation.”
Kaleb coldly sneered, “I am going there for work. I don’t have time to mess with you.”
“I don’t even need you to come along,” Annalise grumbled. “You know how my parents are. They still treat me like a kid. They won’t let me go abroad alone, saying it’s too dangerous out there. So I have to tag along on your work trips and tell them I’m safe with you around. That’s the only way they’re okay with it.”
Kaleb remained silent, not saying a word. Annalise said again,“If, by any chance, I had any trouble abroad, I could seek help from you in the first place. We are like bros, taking care of each other!”
Kaleb was speechless.

The spring rain lasted for six days and finally stopped. The air was unusually humid, and the gloomy sky had no trace of sunlight, which made people feel somewhat melancholic. The taxi drove into Elegance Heights and stopped in front of a two–story standalone villa.
I got out of the car and looked inside through the iron gate. My mood was darker than the stormy sky. We had been married for two years, and I rarely visited my father–in–law and stepmother–in–law’s house. But this time, it was Danna who invited me. Knowing that Danna was coming from the countryside, she was thrilled and couldn’t wait to see her.
I rang the doorbell. In an instant, the nanny came out from inside. A kind and honest middle–aged woman with a gentle smile opened the iron gate and said, “Katrina, you have finally arrived. Madam Barton has been eagerly waiting for you.”
I politely nodded. “Hello, Dalia.”
“Okay, come in quickly,” Dalia closed the door and led me into the house. In the splendid living room, the lights were bright, and four leather sofas of different lengths were placed around a large, low coffee table. People were sitting around it.
