Chapter 42
Danna looked towards the gate. “Why haven’t I seen Kaleb? Didn’t he come with you?”
My heart tightened. I hadn’t seen Kaleb for six days. When I received Danna’s call, I came straight from the Drug Development Institute.
Danna sat down with me, and Annalise forced a smile and said with a hint of guilt,“Mrs. Barton, I’m sorry. I forgot to bring you a gift.”
Danna sat down next to me, gently holding my hand, and looked at Annalise. Her tone became colder. Nowadays, with the internet, you can buy anything you want. Shopping services handle the rest.” The implication was, “Who cares about your gift?”
Annalise’s face darkened in an instant. She returned to her parents‘ side and sat down. With a helpless tone, she sighed, “Kaleb is such a workaholic. I wanted to take him abroad to relax and have fun. I didn’t expect him to be a workaholic. He just kept staying in the branch office there. Seems there was a lot of work to deal with.”
Camille frowned and complained, “Was Kaleb so irresponsible when he went on a trip with you? How could I entrust my daughter to him?” In their eyes, Kaleb marrying me was temporary, while Kaleb and Annalise were a perfect match. That was what the family truly wanted.
Annalise quickly explained, “Mom, don’t say that about Kaleb. Understandably, he is career–oriented, and besides, he always brought me along when he was busy with work.”
Camille’s lips slightly curled. “At least he’s still got some conscience.”
I sat in silence with a heavy heart. An indescribable sense of suffocation made me feel weak all over.
Danna couldn’t bear it anymore. With a cold face, she asked, “Kaleb has his parents and a wife to take care of, and in the future, he will have his children to take care of. Your daughter is not disabled, so why should she be entrusted to Kaleb to take care of?”
Camille looked a little embarrassed and smiled, saying, “Madam Barton, please don’t misunderstand. When I say ‘take care,‘ I mean the care between siblings.”
“Our Hana never thought of relying on Kaleb to take care of her, but you are not polite at all.” Danna took no nonsense from them.
After being scolded, Camille’s face turned serious, and she didn’t say anything anymore. Annalise clenched her back teeth and held back her discomfort, pursing her lips to force out a stiff smile. She was loved by everyone, except for Danna, who had a preference for me. She was unwilling and very annoyed.
