Chapter 61
Three o’clock in the afternoon. I walked into the lobby of the Barton Group. The magnificent lobby was particularly grand and majestic. I walked up to the reception desk and politely said, “Hello, my name is Katrina Larson. I’m here to see Mr. Barton.”
The receptionist politely asked, “Do you have an appointment?”
I shook my head.
“Sorry, Ms. Larson, you need to make an appointment.”
I took out my phone and said, “Shall I give him a call in person? If I get his approval, does that count as an appointment?”
The receptionist smiled and said, “Of course.”
I was about to dial when a sudden sound of hurried high heels came along with a familiar woman’s voice, “Katrina? Why are you here?”
I looked over in the direction of the sound. Annalise, heavily made–up and dressed in a stylish sheath dress, walked over from the leisure area. On the tabletop in the leisure area were live–streaming tools and various bottles and jars of cosmetics, all in a mess. As soon as I saw Annalise’s hypocritical smile, my calm heart was stirred by a damp and oppressive wave.
Annalise warmly took hold of my hand and said, “Katrina, do you want to see Kaleb? No need to make a phone call appointment. I just finished my broadcast, and I’ll take you up.”
My expression was cold and distant as I slowly withdrew my hand. I didn’t want to have any physical contact with Annalise. I didn’t refuse and followed Annalise to take the elevator straight up to the twentieth floor.
“Kaleb is inside. Go straight in!” Annalise pointed at the door before us.
I looked up at the doorplate and deep down knew that Annalise was pretending to be ignorant on purpose, trying to embarrass me.
“This is the conference room,” I couldn’t be bothered to reveal my lie.
“Yes, he is inside!” Annalise blinked her eyes, pretending to be ignorant.
I sat down on a chair, not in the mood to play tricks with her, and said lightly, “I am waiting here for him to finish the meeting.”
Annalise saw that I was clever enough to not fall into her trap, so she no longer insisted and curiously asked, “Katrina, what brings you here to see Kaleb?”
I looked up at her impatiently. “He is my husband. Can’t I come to him for no reason?”
