Hearing how I had addressed Kaleb, Annalise instantly stopped smiling. A hint of undisguised displeasure flashed in her eyes. She worked hard to remain calm and forced a smile, saying.“That makes sense. Well, you can wait here, and I’ll go for a stroll.”
I sat quietly on a chair outside the conference room, tightly clutching the bag strap in my hand, occasionally glancing at the closed door. Suddenly, a faint sound of footsteps broke the silence, followed by a deep opening of the door. I stood up nervously. Some people walked out of the conference room one after another. Judging from their slightly older age and dignified demeanor, they did not look like employees, but rather like shareholders. It was no ordinary meeting. Luckily, I hadn’t been fooled by Annalise and impulsively barged in. These people walked past me with steady steps and dignified manners.
Finally, I saw Kaleb come out. He was walking while looking down at the documents, explaining something to his assistant next to him. He did not notice me.
“Kaleb,” I softly called out to him.
Kaleb paused and looked up at me. His eyes darkened slightly, he covered the documents, and handed them to his assistant. He then walked toward me. I unconsciously twirled the ribbon with my fingers, as if only this could relieve the tension in my heart.
Kaleb approached and instinctively took out his phone to take a glance. After confirming that there were no missed calls, he put his phone back into his pocket. His voice was deep and gentle, with a hint of subtle concern. He asked, “How long have you been here?”
I shook my head gently.“No, just arrived.”
He said, “You can give me a call first next time.”
“Okay.” I had no idea what he meant by saying that. Was he afraid I would wait too long? Or did he hope that I would make an appointment first, so as not to disturb his work?
Kaleb instructed the assistant, “Go print two copies of the contract that was prepared this morning and bring them to the office.”
