Chapter 70
Feira
Giana eepped forward and hugged me. The embrace warmed my aching heart. Tears fell, sliding down my pale cheeks. I had longed for a hug. Leaning on Giana’s shoulder, I said softly but firmly, Giana, everything I have, I earned through hard work. I don’t need a man’s pity. I’ve paid my taxes and have all the legal documents. I may not be extraordinary, but I won’t be easily knocked down.”
“Yes,” Giana stroked my back, comforting me, ‘since college, you’ve been my role model. You’re always gentle but strong inside.”
I stepped back, wiped my tears, and took a deep breath. “Let’s go in and get those people out of here.”
I walked forward and entered. Giana followed behind, fretting. “Those people are clearly here to cause trouble, and they’re not easy to handle.”
I stayed calm.
In the office, several middle–aged men sat on the sofa, arguing with the salesperson about animal protection, their faces angry. When I entered, the salesperson looked relieved and introduced, “She’s our legal rep. She decides if these animals are released.”
Seeing that I was young and frail, the men became even more aggressive. As they stood up to threaten me, I spoke first, “I can release these animals, but your Animal Protection Association will bear all the consequences.” The eldest man arrogantly said, “Sure.”
I stated, “I have hundreds of monkeys for experiments in my lab. Over half carry rare, highly contagious viruses. The rest are also sick. My drugs, tested on them, save them. Without my institute, they’ll die within two weeks. Mishandle this, and you’ll be the first infected by these viruses. The spread is unpredictable.”
Everyone exchanged looks, faces pale and slightly panicked. I noticed their unease and calmly asked, “Do you still want me to release them now?”
The eldest man hesitated, fearing the animals might spread viruses, a burden he couldn’t bear. Annoyed, he said, “You’re gonna get sued.”
