His hug, the first time he’d hugged me like that, was a nervous yet warm feeling. I realized then that the embrace of a loved one can truly alleviate worries, comfort the soul, and create a sense of reliance. His chest was warm and solid, his scent pleasant, although unfamiliar, yet it brought a sense of comfort. I froze, not daring to move a muscle, unsure if it was Kaleb’s heartbeat or my own, pounding like thunder, beating particularly hard, faintly audible, strong and powerful, causing great confusion.
Kaleb gently stroked my back with one hand, while the other hand reached up to touch the back of my head. His hot breath brushed against the top of my head as he spoke in a soft and low tone, “I can help your brother in a different way, but I can’t just give him money; it would hurt his pride.”
My nervous voice got stuck in my throat, and I couldn’t speak. I found myself longing for his warm embrace and nodded in his arms. My fingertips pulsed wildly, wanting to lift my hand and wrap it around his waist, eager but hesitant to make a move.
Kaleb slowly lowered his head, his nose touching the top of my head; he closed his eyes and greedily sniffed my hair, which was mixed with the scent of flowers. After a while, his Adam’s apple moved, and his voice became hoarse and low, “It’s late, let’s go home first.” After saying that, he didn’t have any intention of letting go. This situation left me somewhat at a loss, and I quickly pushed him away, taking two steps back. My face turned bright red, and I felt embarrassed, unable to look up. I hesitantly responded, “Okay,” while swallowing nervously. Kaleb stared at my flushed face for a while, let out a sigh, and turned to go downstairs. I followed behind him. On the way back, I fell into a state of sadness, looking out of the window with a downcast expression, not saying a word. I remained silent all the way. When I got home, I entered the house first, changed my shoes, and dragged my exhausted body into the room, closing the door softly.
