After I sat down, I turned my head and looked out of the glass window. My melancholic heart was in disarray, and even the beautiful weather outside the window made me feel stifled and oppressed.
“Why not sit in the front?” Kaleb asked in a casual tone.
I didn’t expect him to ask like that; not knowing if it was a momentary lapse of judgment or if I was already feeling resentful and unhappy, without thinking, I blurted out, “I won’t sit in Annalise’s designated seat.”
The carriage suddenly fell into a dead silence. I couldn’t see Kaleb’s expression. I just felt that I was usually good at hiding my emotions, but today, being messed with by my father–in–law, my heart was truly in chaos, and I said things I shouldn’t have said.
After a long while, the silence remained unbroken as Kaleb started the car and drove away. The vehicle left the Elegance Heights, and I said weakly, “If it’s not on the way, just drop me off outside the subway entrance.”
Kaleb said, “I’m going home, not to the office.”
I fell silent and didn’t say anything. The bustling street scenes outside the window passed by frame by frame, with the Suzuki flowers on the roadside particularly bright yellow. Each petal fell to the ground and was crushed by the speeding vehicles.
An hour later, as we entered the road near our house, Kaleb asked in a muted voice, “Shall we go back to the Drug Development Institute, or go home?”
“The Drug Development Institute,” I replied softly.
The vehicle stopped in front of the Drug Development Institute, and I unbuckled my seatbelt, picked up my backpack, and prepared to get off. My hand had just touched the doorknob when Kaleb leaned back against the chair, his voice sounding cold and distant.
“You were forced to get a divorce, and you don’t have anything to say to me?”
I felt gloomy in my heart. With his question, my nose felt sour, but I pretended to be calm and said, “I have already decided to hand over the special medicine project to the country. It won’t change. As for whether you want to divorce me or not, discuss it with your father and let me know.”
