The next day, in the morning. I was eating breakfast when the doorbell rang. I put down my fork and got up to the door. Outside stood Annalise, wearing a black business-style suit dress and holding two bags of breakfast. She had heavy makeup and a particularly bright smile.
“Good morning, Katrina.”
Early in the morning, seeing her felt unlucky, and my heart felt heavy. I faintly responded, “Good morning!”
“I came over to pick up Kaleb for work and brought him breakfast on the way,” Annalise said as she walked into the house, without bothering to change into slippers. I endured silently and closed the door.
Annalise placed the breakfast on the table and noticed my own breakfast-two boiled eggs and two steamed buns. A disgusted expression crossed her face.
“Katrina, you don’t have to make breakfast for Kaleb anymore, I will take care of it.” Annalise pulled out a transparent breakfast box from the bag. Five varieties of food were neatly lined up, a mix of meat and vegetables; it looked particularly abundant.
I remained silent, sat back in my seat, and continued eating my eggs, feeling a sense of unease.
“This was made by my family’s nanny herself, it’s nutritious, healthy, and delicious.” Annalise arranged the
breakfast nicely and looked at me.”Do you want me to bring you a portion as well?”
“No need.” I put the leftover egg yolk into a bowl, picked up another egg, tapped it gently, and carefully peeled off the shell.
Annalise stared at me, her smile becoming increasingly forced. I couldn’t understand why. I was just wearing a
with my long black hair tied up, and my face was without any makeup. There were no plain shirt and pants, accessories on me at all, yet she seemed to find my appearance remarkable.
My face wasn’t swollen, there were no dark circles, my skin was as smooth as cream without a single blemish or
scar.
