Chapter 36 You Sent Me In
The man in front of Camila was strikingly handsome, to the point where even top–tier heartthrobs like Harry and William seemed ordinary in comparison.
Camila paused for a moment, then quickly regained her composure. All she wanted was a quiet, empty spot to sit for a while, but to her surprise, there was someone in the stairwell.
She considered turning around and leaving, but since she was already inside, there was no point.
He was just a stranger–there was no reason to pay him any mind. With that thought, Camila felt more at ease. She slowly descended the stairs, her tired legs dragging.
As she passed by the man, the smoke from his cigarette wafted over to her, and the sharp, overpowering scent of tobacco hit her nostrils, making her head spin for a moment.
Camila stopped and looked at him.
Coincidentally, the man was looking back at her. Noticing her furrowed brow, he apologized politely, “Sorry”
He made a move to put out the cigarette, but before he could, Camila spoke up, “Excuse me, do you have another one? Could I have one?”
The man was taken aback, clearly surprised by her request. Camila in front of him looked pale and exhausted, with a troubled look in her eyes.
He didn’t say anything, just pulled out another cigarette and handed it to her.
“Thank you, Camila said softly, taking the cigarette and mimicking his actions by putting it in her mouth.
She heard the sound of a match striking, and a slender hand appeared in front of her, fingers long and defined. The flickering flame in the dim stairwell cast a soft light on their faces.
Camila paused for a second, then lowered her head, lighting the cigarette from his hand and taking a deep drag. The nicotine hit her lungs sharply, and she almost coughed it out, quickly exhaling the smoke.
The man noticed she wasn’t used to smoking. His brows lifted slightly, but he didn’t say anything, just withdrew his hand.
Camila sat down slowly on the stairs, quietly smoking.
Having seen men smoke when they were in a bad mood, she now realized that smoking didn’t ease her frustration at all.
The stairwell fell into silence, with only the faint crackling of the burning cigarette and the occasional smoke rings drifting through the air.
The man finished his cigarette first, tossing the butt into a nearby trash can. He stepped up onto the next stair, his footsteps echoing in the quiet space.
Just before stepping out of the stairwell, he glanced down at Camila’s still, slender figure, and the small spark of fire at her fingertips. He paused for a moment, then continued on his way.
Camila sat in the stairwell for a long time before finally leaving. She felt drained, her mind clouded with exhaustion, and all she wanted was to return to her hospital room and rest.
However, when she pushed open the door to her room, she was surprised to find someone already inside–someone she least wanted to see.
He sat quietly by the window, bathed in the soft light of the sun. But Camila knew that beneath that gentle appearance, his nature was anything but soft–he was as sharp as a knife, capable of bringing ruin to anyone who crossed him. Owen looked up and, seeing her, immediately stood and walked over to help her. But Camila skillfully dodged him. His hand froze mid–air, and he clenched his fist, pretending to be unfazed. “Camila, where have you been?” Camila ignored him and went straight to the bed.
An awkward look crossed Owen’s face. “Camila, would you like some fruit? I can peel it for you.”
Camila shot Owen a cold, dismissive glance, her voice dripping with clear irritation. “Mr. Wilson, you are a busy m s nothing important, you wouldn’t come looking for me. No need to waste time with small talk. Let’s get to the po Her coldness left Owen feeling a tightness in his chest, but he didn’t dare continue with the pleasantries. Instead, straight in. “Camila, did you push Agnes down the stake?

Owen had expected Cerita to deny it or at least offer some explanation. But instead, she admitted it without hesitation. He stared at her in disbelief
Camila, however, only looked at him coldly, her eyes full of sarcasm. “I wonder, what’s your plan this time, Mr. Wilson? Are you going to send me back to prison? How many years will you give me? Five? Ten?
Each word was like a sharp blade, cutting into Owen’s heart. He felt as though his throat was constricted, unable to speak
for a long time
“Camila, we’ve known each other since childhood. You know I would never do something like that to you.”
Camila said nothing. If she hadn’t spent five years in prison, maybe she would have believed him.
But after everything that had happened, no matter how sweet his words were, she would never trust him again She didn’t want to look at him, nor did she want to hear any more of his hollow promises.
“If you’re not here to send me to prison, then you can leave. If you’re here to sue me, I’m ready to face you anytime
Owen’s heart ached as he said, “Camila, I came because I’m worried about you.”
Camila was utterly indifferent. “I don’t need it.”
Her repeated rejections pushed Owen to the edge of his patience.
He stepped forward, his eyes filled with desperation and pain. “Camila, what do I need to do for you to forgive me? Can’t you see how much I care about you?
“Since you got out of prison, I’ve tried to find any excuse to come see you. But every time, you ignore me. What do you want from me? Just tell me.”
Camila finally looked at him, her gaze as cold as ice. “I spent five years in prison and didn’t feel wronged.
“But here you are, a lawyer using fake evidence, pretending you’re the one who’s been wronged. Don’t you understand how important it is for someone to be innocent?”
Owen’s face turned pale, his heart heavy. He didn’t want things to be this way, but he felt trapped. Agnes had helped him when he was struggling–without her financial support, he wouldn’t have been able to finish school.
That alone showed that, despite being a wealthy heiress, Agnes wasn’t like the usual privileged rich girls. He thought she was a kind–hearted person.
He didn’t believe Agnes would have pushed Emily down the stairs. But with both of the Jackson family parents accusing Camila, even if he didn’t believe Camila had done it, she was the only one who could have.
He gazed at Camila with sorrow, hoping she would understand his conflict.
His eyes were filled with helplessness and inner turmoil. “Camila, no matter what happened in the past, we need to look ahead. Why do you keep clinging to the past?”
Camila could hardly believe her ears. It was like hearing the greatest joke. Someone who hadn’t felt the pain would never
understand it.
It was only today that she truly saw Owen for who he was–a fool who had wrongfully accused her without a second thought.
She had been wronged, but she was the one who was told not to hold a grudge. If she did, she’d be considered petty for not letting go of the past. She hated him–hated herself for not seeing his true nature sooner.
If she had known he was this kind of person, she wouldn’t have worked herself to the bone, taking on multiple jobs, competing in countless contests, just to earn enough money to support his studies.
She had even been afraid of burdening him, so she never dared to give him money directly–only helping him anonymously.
She never imagined that the law student she had supported would, after graduation, use his knowledge to send her to prison. And now, he had the nerve to tell her to “move on.”
