The fact that he asked permission when I clearly had none was strange. It gave me the illusion of choice. I nodded, unable to speak.

I forced myself to look at him directly. “Please don’t tell me to look you in the eyes; I can’t handle that now.”
He nodded, respecting my discomfort. After what we’d done together, this sudden shyness seemed, absurd, yet I couldn’t help it.
“Is this normal? I mean you two…” I left the question hanging, not even sure what I was asking.
Frost raised an eyebrow. “Do you mean to ask if we always fucked the same girl?”
The crude directness made me flinch. “Yeah?”
“Sometimes. But it is different with others.”
“What makes it different?” I asked, genuinely curious despite my embarrassment.
He considered the question carefully. “I can’t hurt you; Kaius would kill me.”
His answer sent a shiver down my spine. It wasn’t concern for me that restrained him, but fear of Kaius’s reaction. Yet there had been gentleness in his touch, care in his movements.

“Just fun?” I echoed, hating the vulnerability in my voice.
I studied him, trying to reconcile this man with the Frost I thought I knew–the one who’d carried me through the forest on his back, who’d shown me kindness when few others had.
“I’ve never seen you with any shewolves,” I observed.
“I don’t have a mate,” he replied, as if that explained everything.
A question formed in my mind, one I wasn’t sure I wanted answered. “What are we?”
His eyes softened slightly. “Elowen, I care about you, and I liked having sex with you, but you belong to Kaius.”
“You did not answer my question.”
“I could be anything–a friend, a brother…” he paused, a wry smile touching his lips. “Okay, maybe not a brother.”
The casual way he dismissed what had happened between us left me feeling unsettled.
“Could you tell me something?” I asked, gathering my courage.

His expression turned guarded. It depends on the question asked, and from the look on your face, it must be a question I am prohibited fron answering.”
“I just want to know. Kaius has done a lot for me and my mother, but.. I can’t seem to understand what he is getting out of this.”
“You will find out soon enough.” Frost’s cryptic answer did nothing to ease my confusion.
He suddenly stiffened, his head turning toward the door. “Kaius is on his way here; I should leave.”
