Chapter 20 Seeing Mom

Frank’s POV

I lay sprawled on the cold bluestone ground, blood gurgling in my throat with a raw, animalistic tang

The moonlight glinted off Yael’s sharp wolf fangs, his claws still smeared with my distinct gray fur

Please

stop I whimpered, exposing my fractured canine fang, my tail curling up in fear

But the lunatic only grabbed my right car and hurled me against the stone wall of the courtyard

Bang

As the granite crumbled around me, I could feel the searing pain of my hind leg bone snapping

The werewolves of the Silvermoon Alliance watched, their expressions cold, as if witnessing a defeated beast’s last moments

Eason stood nearby, holding Susan. He seemed entirely unbothered, even casually toying with the parrot in her arms

Inlaws Dad trembled, a pitiful whimper from an aging wolf. EnoughKilling is a crime

Mom huddled in a corner, paralyzed with fear

Killing is a crime?Yael, now back in his human form, spat in disgust. If anything, I’d be praised for putting down a rabid dog.”

Without hesitation, he drove his silverpoisoned claws into my groin, twisting with merciless force

Ah-”

My agonized screams sent the night crows scattering from the rooftops

Those who betray my sister will be punished!”

Yael sneered and walked away, brushing off his hands

I wasn’t interested. I no longer belonged to Grayclaw Tribe. I sat in the car, my fingers gently stroking the parrot’s soft feathers

Grandpa leaned through the car window, his voice soft as he said, Susan, we’re going home.”

Uncle Eason ruffled my hair, adding, Our home is in the southeast. We’ll be flying there

soon.”

In truth, I wanted to ride home on a giant wolf, like last time. Frank once told me that the Alpha’s wolf form could outrun a plane

I nodded, cradling the parrot closer

Out of nowhere, I asked, Grandpa, can we take Mom’s ashes home, too?”

He nodded gently. Yes. She’ll come home with us.”

A wave of comfort washed over me

The clouds outside the plane window looked like fluffy cotton candy. I pressed my nose against the cold glass

Are we in the sky now?I asked, my small feet curling up in white socks. The roar of the plane made me speak louder than usual

Uncle Freddie nodded. Yes, we are.”

When I was little, Mom said people went to heaven after they died.”

Uncle Freddie and Uncle Eason, who were sitting close by, both seemed caught off guard. What did you say?”

I turned back to the window, tears welling up as I stared into the sky

I knew it was just a comforting story for kids. Mom wouldn’t be in heaven

But still, a tiny part of me wished it were true. I missed her so much

Uncle Eason wrapped me in a gentle hug. Close your eyes, Susan. If you sleep, you might see, her in your dreams.”

I nodded my tears soaking into Fason’s suit as he held me close

In my dream, fluffy clouds with a sugary taste drifted into my mouth. Mom’s white dress flowed gently in the breeze. I reached out, hoping to tuck a wildflower from the Grayclaw villa behind her car, but my fingers slipped right through her hair

Her familiar medicinal scent lingered, but it was now as faint as morning mist

Look after your grandma for me,she said softly, pressing a piece of candy into my hand- the same one I had hidden under my pillow for months without eating

Stay happy with your grandpa and uncles.”

Out of nowhere, a burning sensation flared up on my wrist, and the wolf fang bracelet dug into my skin

Mom’s image started to blur. I stretched on my toes, desperately clutching at her dress, but all I managed to catch were a few scorching raindrops

The rain from the clouds tasted salty, just like the tears I cried alone in the darkness each night

When I opened my eyes, my cheek was still resting against the intricate dark pattern on Uncle Eason’s lapel. The gold embroidery tickled my eyelids

My fingers had unknowingly latched onto his cuff link. I felt the gentle rumble of his voice through his chest. Did you dream of your mom?”

Yes,I whispered, my gaze drifting to the space beside me

Mom’s wolf spirit, Carsyn, had appeared

She gently touched my forehead, then tapped the wolf fang bracelet on my wrist

As your godmother, I’ve been worrying about you all this time.”
