Chapter 106
Summer’s POV
The past week had been a blur of hospital visits and quiet evenings at the Hamptons. Ever since Grandpa collapsed, my life had narrowed to Brandon’s estate and Manhattan General. I hadn’t set foot in Fortune Corp since quitting.
Grandpa had been stuck in that hospital bed for a week, and I’d visited him every chance I got. Since telling him about marrying Brandon, he’d been dead–sel on meeting my husband properly.
“How’s it looking?” Brandon appeared behind me, his hand settling on my waist.
“Six hours and counting,” I replied. “Think that’s enough?”
Brandon tasted a spoonful, nodding approvingly. “Perfect. The longer you simmer, the better the flavor. George will love it.”
I filled a thermos, screwing the lid tight. “God, I hope this helps. He’s been cooped up way too long.”
“When he’s feeling better, we’ll make time for that proper introduction,” Brandon said. “I’m actually looking forward to it.”
The antiseptic smell hit me the moment I stepped off the elevator at Manhattan General. Halfway down the corridor, a familiar figure blocked my path–Elizabeth Taylor, arms crossed and eyes cold
“Well, look who finally showed up,” she snapped, her manicured fingers suddenly digging into my arm. “You ungrateful little brat, you can’t even say hello to your own mother?”
I yanked my arm free. “Mom.” The word felt hollow.
Her eyes narrowed. “Is that your attitude now? After everything we’ve done for you?”
“If there’s nothing else, I should go in. I brought Grandpa some soup
“You’re not going anywhere,” Elizabeth blocked my path. “Tell me the truth about those shares. Did you really give them away?”
I laughed incredulously. “Wasn’t I clear enough the other day? You were right there.”
“Don’t get smart with me,” she hissed.
“Look, I already told you–as long as Capital Corp’s ownership stays unchanged, my portion won’t cause problems. But if anyone tries to mess with the structure…”
“How dare you!” Elizabeth’s voice rose. “Capital Corp has nothing to do with you! Who the hell did you give those shares to? How much did they pay you?”
“It doesn’t matter,” I replied. “The shares were Grandpa’s to give, and now they’re mine to manage.”
Elizabeth’s hand shot up, ready to strike.
I jerked backward, dodging the slap. The door to Grandpa’s room swung open, and George Taylor stood there, leaning on his cane, face flushed with anger.
That’s enough!” Grandpa shouted. “What the hell do you think you’re doing, Elizabeth? You’d hit your own daughter right in front
of me?”

Elizabeth paled. ‘George, you don’t understand–Summer betrayed this family! She gave your shares to some outsider!”
Grandpa snorted. “Summet, come here, sweetheart.”
I smoothed my sleeve and moved to his side, taking his arm. “You shouldn’t be up, Grandpa. Let me help you back.”
“I’m fine,” he waved me off. “Been lying around too damn much anyway.”
He turned to Elizabeth, his expression hardening. “Those shares were mine to give, and I gave them to Summer. What she does with them is her business.” His voice was steel. “And as for outsiders–I think we both know who the real traitors are in this family.”
Elizabeth gasped, “We would never let Capital Corp shares leave the family!”
“Wouldn’t you?” Grandpa laughed coldly. “Don’t think I don’t see what’s happening just because I’m old.”
“That’s not fair! Our shares remain with the Taylors. It’s Summer who won’t even tell us who she’s given control to!”
“Enough!” Grandpa cut her off. “Instead of worrying about Summer, maybe focus on keeping Victoria out of the tabloids. Summer doesn’t need your ‘concern‘ anymore.”
“Now,” he added firmly, “I need to rest. You should leave.”
Elizabeth stood with fists clenched before finally storming toward the elevator.
Back in the hospital room, I helped Grandpa settle into his chair and unpacked the thermos.
“You shouldn’t stress yourself out, Grandpa,” I said, pouring the broth. “It’s not good for your recovery.”
Grandpa chuckled. “You moved pretty quick back there. Not such a pushover anymore, huh?”
I sighed. “She’s still my mother. I may have dodged her this time, but she’ll find other opportunities.”
“Let’s drop it,” I added, handing him the soup. “Try this instead. Made it specially for you this morning.”
Grandpa took a spoonful, his face lighting up. “It’s good! Your cooking gets better every time.”
“I’m glad you like it. Brandon suggested simmering it longer for more flavor.”
“Brandon, Brandon,” Grandpa’s eyes twinkled. “Sounds like that young man is taking good care of you.”
I felt heat creep into my cheeks. “He is.”
Grandpa studied me. “You’ve been here almost every day. Don’t you have work?”
I hesitated. “Actually, I’m not at Fortune Corp anymore.”
“What?” Grandpa straightened. “What happened?”
I explained briefly–the accusations, being stripped of responsibilities, my resignation.
“Those bastards,” Grandpa muttered. “Alexander thinks he can treat my granddaughter like this?”
“It doesn’t matter,” I assured him. “I was planning to quit anyway. Things were too awkward with Alexander, and Victoria’s constant hostility… I just needed out.”

Grandpa squeezed my hand. rim sorry, kiddo. I know how much that job meant to you.”
I shrugged, fighting the pang of loss. “Some people just aren’t worth the effort. Time for a fresh start.”
“So what’s next?” Grandpa asked. “Any plans?”
“Taking some time off first. Don’t worry, I’ll figure something out.”
“And what does your husband think about all this?”
“Brandon wants me to work at Stark Group,” I said with a small smile. “It’s a great opportunity, but…”
“But what?”
“I want to earn my position. Not just get it because I’m the boss’s wife,”
Grandpa chuckled. ‘Smart man, that Brandon. Stark Group would be lucky to have you.” He took another spoonful of soup before asking, “Those Capital Corp shares–do you really not regret giving them up?”
The question caught me off guard. “Are you having second thoughts, Grandpa?”
