Chapter 13: A Secret Intercepted
Chapter 13: A Secret Intercepted
(Freya’s POV)
“It’s done, Bella…” I whispered softly, my voice barely audible as I clutched the phone tightly in my hand,
staring at the now–sent message on the screen.
My wolf stirred within me, the pacing and whining that had unsettled my mind earlier finally ceasing. Instead,
Bella let out a soft rumble of approval, a protective warmth radiating from her presence.
I exhaled shakily and placed the phone back on the bedside table. My hand trembled as I withdrew it, a swirl
of emotions battling inside me–relief, dread, and a desperate hope I didn’t dare name.
“He’s busy,” I murmured, my voice a fragile thread as I tried to reason with myself. Aaron was likely tied up
with pack business in his office, pouring over territory reports or outlining patrol routes.
“He’ll reply when he sees it,” I told Bella, but the reassurance felt hollow even as I said it.
Bella didn’t argue this time. Instead, she settled down quietly within me, her essence curling protectively
around the cub beneath my heart.
The room seemed too quiet now, the emptiness pressing down on me like a heavy weight. My fingers gravitated toward my abdomen as if seeking solace in the little life growing inside me. A spark of calmness. seeped through my weary body. Whether or not Aaron responded right away didn’t matter at this moment. I
had taken a step forward–for myself, for my cub, for us.
“Rest…” I whispered faintly to both Bella and the cub.
Leaning back against the pillows, I closed my eyes, willing the unease from my trembling limbs. Bella’s presence reassured me as I slipped into a light, tentative sleep.
(Caroline’s POV)
The morning sunlight poured in through the office window, highlighting the neat rows of files and papers strewn across Aaron’s desk. He sat across from me, his golden eyes focused on the documents in front of
him. His features were calm yet commanding, every movement brimming with the unquestionable authority
of an Alpha King.
I should have been observing the details of the territory reports he was reviewing–or at least pretending to.
Yet my attention had… strayed.
Aaron’s phone rested near the edge of the desk. As if compelled by instinct, I glanced at it again, a sudden vibration pulling my eyes to the screen where an unread message popped up.
Two words caught my breath, freezing me in place.
“I’m pregnant.”
The message hung in the air like a ghost, the sender’s number instantly recognizable as Freya’s.
My heart thudded loudly in my chest, each beat sharper than the last. She had sent this–bold, straightforward without fear of what might follow. Adrenaline surged through me, and my mind churned with possibilities.

From the corner of my eye, I noticed Aaron look up. For one terrifying second, I thought he’d caught me
staring at his phone.
“Everything alright?” he asked, his tone neutral but curious as he picked up on the minute tension I hadn’t managed to hide.
I forced a calm, practiced smile, my lips curving upward as if this moment meant nothing. “Yes, of course,” I said lightly, leaning back in my seat and deliberately relaxing my posture. “Just looking up the alliance contacts like you suggested.”
Aaron studied me for another second, his piercing golden gaze lingering on my face longer than I liked. I
needed to act, and now.
As soon as his attention shifted back down to the reports, I moved quickly. My fingers curled around his phone, my grip steady even though my heart raced wildly. I opened the message once more, the bold letters
cutting like a knife.
I deleted it without hesitation.
My wolf bristled uneasily within me, a low growl of warning reverberating in my mind. Was this Freya’s attempt to strengthen her position as Luna? Did she think carrying Aaron’s cub would somehow shield her
from the inevitable?
“Bella’s too clever for her own good,” I muttered under my breath, dismissing any traces of doubt.
I placed the phone back on the desk gently, masking the urgency in my movements. When Aaron’s focus lifted again, I smiled, casual and confident.
“Thank you for letting me use your phone,” I said, adding an extra layer of gratitude to my tone. To anyone else, it would have sounded natural. Warm, even. But I was fishing.
Aaron raised an eyebrow, his features softening slightly as he met my gaze. “You don’t have to thank me, Caroline,” he replied smoothly, his voice holding that air of familiarity that always made me feel like his first
choice–his only choice.
“You’re usually so careful about your phone,” I probed gently, letting a small laugh accompany my words. “I’m
surprised you let me near it.”
He smiled faintly, leaning back in his chair as he stretched his shoulders. “You’re different, Caroline. You
know that.”
His words should have been reassuring, yet an ugly gash of guilt tore through my chest instead.
“You’ve given me more trust than I deserve, Aaron,” I managed softly, my wolf flinching inside me.
Aaron leaned forward again, his tone filled with appreciation. “I’ll always trust you. You saved my life,
Caroline. I owe you everything.”
Cold, sharp guilt pierced me again, stealing my breath for a moment.
The truth of it all–the details locked away in the recesses of my mind–mocked me. When that rival pack attacked Aaron all those years ago, I hadn’t saved him. I hadn’t done anything.
I had been powerless, frozen in fear, unable to move. It had been another young wolf who’d charged into the chaos, fighting fiercely to protect Aaron and help him escape.

Aaron never learned the truth.
‘I’ll always be grateful for what you did that night,” he continued, his voice steady and full of sincerity.

I felt my shoulders stiffen imperceptibly, my mask threatening to c***k under the weight of his words. It was suffocating to hear him recount that night, again and again, as if clinging to a lie that had somehow brought
us closer.
“Caroline?” Aaron’s voice pulled me from my spiraling thoughts, snapping me back to the present.
I blinked quickly, meeting his gaze. His expression was tinged with concern.
“Sorry, I…” I smiled tightly, brushing an imaginary wrinkle from my sleeve. “I was just lost in thought.”
He studied me for half a second longer before nodding.
As we continued discussing routine pack matters, my mind worked furiously. Deleting the text had bought
me time, but time alone wasn’t enough. If Freya was truly pregnant, staying idle would only ruin everything!
had carefully built.
After a while, I stood, smoothing my dress. “I should leave you to your work,” I said lightly. “You have plenty to manage without my distractions.”
Aaron looked up, his brows furrowing slightly. “Wait,” he said.
My heart skipped again, but I leaned casually against the armrest of the chair, arching an eyebrow. “Yes?”
“There was a notification on my phone earlier–something I glimpsed for a second,” he said. His golden eyes
locked onto mine.
I forced myself to laugh, a sound light and false as I waved a dismissive hand. “Oh, that? It was spam ~hout territory sales. I deleted it–it didn’t seem important.”
The silence that followed felt like standing on the edge of a cliff. Aaron’s gaze was sharp, too sharp, and it
lingered even longer than before.
“I shouldn’t have deleted anything without asking,” I added quickly, injecting genuine–seeming regret into my
voice. “I’m sorry if that was out of line.”
Aaron leaned back, crossing his arms as his head tilted slightly. After a beat, he sighed. “It’s fine, but don’t do
that again. I like to keep things orderly.”
“Of course,” I said immediately, nodding with relief.
The atmosphere between our wolves grew tense, Logan watching me closely through Aaron’s unwavering stare. Forcing myself to remain calm, I reminded myself I had no reason to falter.
Aaron finally pressed the intercom on his desk. “Beta Wilson will escort you back to Redwood territory.”
The elevator ride down felt like an eternity. My mind raced as I clenched my fists, the sharp sting of my nails
grounding me.
Aaron’s reaction to the deleted message had unsettled me far more than I wanted to admit. Did it mean… something? His tone earlier, the weight of his gaze as he brought it up, it all felt heavier than necessary for “spam.”
Despite his words, a flicker of doubt lingered–a flicker I couldn’t afford to allow.

ed Points
As much as I hated acknowledging it, my position with Aaron wasn’t as secure as it once seemed. Even as his “savior,” my presence now felt less permanent with every passing day.
No. I told myself firmly. Freya’s text was meaningless now. It had been wiped clean, unseen, unheard.
But…
The nagging tug in the back of my mind warned me otherwise. Texts could be rewritten. Messages could be
sent again.
I needed to act.
Deleting one message wouldn’t be enough. Those two words-“I’m pregnant“-were like a storm cloud on the horizon. If I didn’t secure my place with Aaron soon, that storm would come crashing down around us all.
