Chapter 10: If Sophia Dies,
You’ll Bury Her!
The nurse frowned. “You took sleeping pills?”
“Yeah, two before bed. It’s been…” I glanced at the digital clock above the emergency room
doors. “…about four hours now.”
The nurse immediately shook her head. “That won’t work. Your blood won’t pass the
screening.”
I shrugged, meeting their wide–eyed stares with deliberate calm. “Sorry. It’s not that I refuse to save her–I just can’t.”
Andrew Garcia exploded. “Flora, you played us! If you knew you couldn’t donate, why didn’t you say so earlier?”
“That’s unfair,” I said, blinking innocently as I
looked between them. “Ryan dragged me here by force. I had no idea what was happening.”
“Flora, you-” Ryan Lewis glared at me, teeth

clenched, but there was nothing he could do.
Watching their frustration, my mood suddenly improved.
Just then, the emergency room doors burst open. A nurse rushed out. “We’re running out of blood! Have you found a donor? Hurry!”
Lila Garcia panicked, her legs buckling as she
shoved Andrew Garcia forward. “Go donate!
Our daughter’s dying!”
Andrew Garcia hesitated–clearly valuing his own life–but Lila slapped at him until he relented, rushing off with the nurse.
Ryan Lewis rolled up his sleeve, resolute. “Take mine too!”
Tch. How heroic.
I couldn’t resist needling him. “My blood flows in your body. Taking yours is like taking mine indirectly,”
Ryan Lewis and Lila Garcia both shot me identical, conflicted looks.

I smirked. What? Am I wrong?
Once Ryan Lewis left to donate, I yawned and turned to leave–but Lila Garcia blocked me. “You’re staying! You don’t leave until Sophia is stable!”
I scoffed. “What, if she doesn’t make it, I have to be buried with her?”
She ignored that but threatened, “Walk out now, and you’ll never see your mother’s
shares!”
Furious but trapped, I gave in. Fine. If Sophia dies, I’ll at least witness it.
But the sleeping pills were dragging me under. Yawning until tears welled, I spotted a bench along the hallway, lay down, and passed out instantly.
Somewhere in the haze, I heard Lila Garcia cursing–probably furious that I was sleeping soundly while her daughter fought for life.
Whatever. Not my fault I’m stuck here.

By dawn, Sophia Garcia had cheated death.
again.
Stiff and sore, I got up from the bench and stretched, ready to leave.
Ryan Lewis, dizzy from blood loss, was reportedly resting in a patient room. He’d brought me here, but clearly wouldn’t be driving me back.
Not that I’d accept a ride from him anyway.
Outside the hospital, I raised my hand to hail a cab–when the window of a parked Porsche rolled down, revealing a sweet–faced young girl.
“Hey, pretty miss! Need a ride?”
I blinked, amused. “Yeah… why?”
She beamed. “Hop in! I’ll take you anywhere!”
I eyed the Porsche, then her. “You’re
joking, right? Since when do Porsches do ride–sharing?”

“Since my family cut me off!” She grinned. “Gotta pay my bills somehow. Come on, I haven’t had a single fare today!”
Her earnestness threw me.
Exhausted–two sleeping pills, a night on a bench, every muscle screaming–I just wanted my bed.
Maybe this rich girl was just slumming it for fun, I thought wryly as I opened the passenger door and slid in.
“Sorry, I didn’t bring my phone, so I can’t place an order.”
The girl waved it off. “No problem! I haven’t even set up the ride–hailing app yet. Just pay me whatever you think is fair when we get there.”

I stared, speechless.
After giving her my address, she tapped it into the navigation system and smoothly pulled out. of the parking spot.

We hadn’t gone far when her phone rang.
Bluetooth earpiece in, she answered cheerfully,
“Hey, bro–I had something come up. Have the driver pick you up instead! Ugh, it was last–minute, I didn’t get a chance to tell you… You’ll totally praise me later, trust me! Gotta go, I’m driving!”
As she talked, my eyes flicked to the rearview
mirror.
There, bathed in the morning light outside the hospital, stood a tall, striking figure. The sun cast a glow around him, blending cool elegance with warmth.
He stood so still, so apart from the chaos around him–like a jade tree among weeds.
One arm was raised, phone to his ear. Too far to see his face clearly, but something about him felt… familiar.
Before I could place it, the girl hung up and giggled. “From my family. They don’t believe I’m driving for rideshare. Joke’s on them!”

I smiled but said nothing. This naive little.
princess had clearly never known hardship.
Funny–I was a “rich girl” too, but I’d never known warmth. Mom loved me, but her bitterness poisoned everything.
Then the divorce, the ugly fights, Grandfather’s death, Mom’s death… until I was just a thorn in the Garcia family.
The memories twisted in my chest. After last night, life felt even more meaningless.
“You’re so pretty!” the girl blurted suddenly. “Zero makeup and you still look amazing. I’m jealous!”
I snapped out of it, forcing a laugh. “Thanks.
Sweet talker.”
I looked like death–pale, puffy–eyed—yet she’d said it so earnestly. Maybe she sensed my mood.
“No, really!” She glanced over, eyes sparkling. “You’ve got that kind face. That’s why I picked you up!”

“…” I froze.
My gut said she was lying. But her grin held no deceit just sunshine and stubborn honesty. Against all logic, I liked her.
Weird.
At my villa, I ran inside for cash, returning with
500 dollars. “For the ride.”
She took only 200. “This is plenty!”
“Take it all. Call it lunch on me.”
“Okay! Told you you were nice!” She beamed,
tucking the bills away.
“Drive safe,” I said as she pulled off.
Watching the Porsche disappear, one thought nagged me:
That girl acted like she knew me.
