Chapter 144
Soreness was the first thing I felt when I woke up. Kaius had taken me twice yesterday; satisfaction lingered, but so did a deep fatigue. I pushed myself up, intending to get some water, only for my leg muscles to immediately seize with a sharp ache.
Frost appeared in the doorway of his spare room, a steaming mug in hand. His eyes took in my grimace with poorly concealed
amusement.
“Do you need some help getting up?” he offered, setting the mug on the bedside table.
“I think I can manage that myself, thank you,” I replied, determined to maintain at least some dignity. Yet when I attempted to swing my legs over the edge of the bed, a particularly sharp twinge made me reconsider.
“Are you sure?” Frost raised an eyebrow, making no effort to hide his smirk now.
I sighed, admitting defeat. “Maybe a little help.
He moved to my side, his touch gentle as he helped me to a sitting position. “I did warn you, but you are so stubborn.”
“I didn’t want him to have me back so easily,” I muttered, accepting the mug of tea he offered.
“Well, he did have you.” Frost’s ice–blue eyes danced with mirth.
Okay, you were right, I was wrong… and stubborn, are you happy now?” I took a sip of the perfectly brewed tea, grateful for its soothing warmth.
His expression turned more serious. “He didn’t hurt you badly though, right?”
“No, he didn’t, but even if he did, it would be all on me; I mean, I had been the one begging and pleading for it.”
“He feels guilt, and he is worried too; that’s why he sent me here.” Frost sat on the edge of the bed, his weight creating a dip that caused me to slide slightly toward him.
“I’m not really as soft and breakable as you both imagine me to be.” I straightened, determined to appear stronger than I felt.
“Oh, really?” His skepticism was evident.
“I mean, I am not exactly as strong as you, but I could do stuff.” My protest sounded weak even to my own ears.
“Like what?”
‘I can shoot a gun, and also I could set a bow and an arrow; that is something.” I lifted my chin, daring him to challenge my meager list of accomplishments.
To my surprise, his expression softened. “Elowen, I was only teasing I do think you are a badass.”
“You think so?” Genuine surprise colored my voice.
“You don’t know the power you possess.” There was something in his tone I couldn’t quite identify–reverence, perhaps, or wonder.
“Are you referring to some kind of inner strength?” I asked, uncertain.
“Yes.‘ His simple confirmation felt like it held more meaning than I could grasp.

Chapter 144
“Oh.” I looked down
into my mug, suddenly self–conscious under his intense gaze.
“There aren’t many that have managed to bring Kaius to his knees, you know.” A hint of humor returned to his voice.
I nearly choked on my tea. “How did you know about that?”
“I think I’ll keep that to myself.” The mysterious smile playing at his lips made me narrow my eyes.
“That doesn’t make me a badass.” I set the mug aside, fidgeting with the blanket edge.
“I would pay a fortune to see Kaius on his knees and… naked–if I may add.” The boldness of his statement made my eyes widen.
“I think we should eat; the food is getting cold.” I gestured to the tray he’d brought in, desperate to change the subject.
Frost helped me to the small table in the corner of the room, setting out plates of eggs, toast, and fresh fruit. “Do you want to be fed?”
“I’m sore, not handicapped,” I replied, though the offer was tempting
