The Alpha’s Borrowed Luna
Chapter 164
I pushed open the door to our chambers, my body aching from another day of restless searching. Five days had passed since Kaius disappeared into the forest, and despite Frost’s constant reassurances that he could still sense him through their bond, fear had taken root in my heart, growing with each passing hour.
The scent hit me first–roses, dozens of them, their sweet perfume ing the room. Candles flickered on every surface, casting a warm glow that transformed our familiar space into something ethereal. And there, standing by the window, his tall figure silhouetted against the fading daylight, was Kaius.
“Kaius, you’re back!” I ran to him, all exhaustion forgotten as relief surged through me.
He turned slowly, his amber eyes cautious, watching my approach as if expecting me to recoil from him at any moment. I didn’t hesitate, throwing my arms around him and burying my face against his chest.
“I love you so much, Kaius. Please don’t ever leave me like that again I whispered, breathing in his familiar scent, reassuring myself that he was real, that he was here.
His arms remained at his sides for a moment before cautiously encircling me. “I don’t deserve you, Elowen. I never have, never will. Yet I do not want to let you go; the thought alone… is so hard.”
I looked up, catching the torment in his eyes. “Then don’t think about it, because I wouldn’t either. It will always be the both of us, you and me.
He guided me to sit on the edge of the bed, stepping back to create distance between us. “You should be afraid of me.”
“I know, but I’m not.”
“You shouldn’t trust me.” His voice hardened.
“I wish I didn’t.” The admission slipped out before I could stop it.
“It’s dangerous,” he said, pacing the room like a caged animal. “I am dangerous.”
“I know, but I want you, Kaius. I need you in a way I have never needed any other person before.”
He stopped pacing, his eyes finding mine across the room. “I know what I am now, Elowen, and I won’t blame you if you leave after discovering the truth.”
“I know the truth too.” I stood, closing the distance between us again.
“You don’t.” The certainty in his voice gave me pause.
I know you’re a Lycan. I know you’re powerful, but you never stopped being Kaius, the man I love
Surprise flickered across his face, followed quickly by something darker. “The fact that I’m a monster doesn’t change that?”
“You’re not a monster.”
“I hurt you. Only a monster would hurt a person like you.”
I reached for his hand, refusing to let him pull away. “You cannot control it.”
But I should. I should be able to control it.”

The pain in his voice broke my heart. I recognized the expression forming on his face–the one that meant he was about to make a decision I wouldn’t like.
Please don’t, Kaius. I know what you’re about to do, and I won’t allow it. I won’t allow you to leave me. You can’t. You would never be a monster to me; I will always love you. You can’t cut me away from your life, please.”
“I will never forgive myself for what I did to you.”
“Well, I forgive you.”
“You shouldn’t. I don’t deserve your mercy.”
I took his face in my hands, forcing him to look at me. “Kaius, let me help you. Let me be here for you.”
Something in his expression shifted, the hard lines of self–loathing softening slightly. “You cannot help me, Elowen. But your presence alone is all the comfort I need.”
Relief washed through me. He wasn’t going to leave–at least not tonight.
“I love the flowers,” I said, gesturing to the room he’d transformed in my absence.
“I’m glad you like it.” A small smile touched his lips, though his eyes remained troubled.
