After returning home alone, Claire soaked in the bathtub.
Since her parents‘ death, she had been adopted by the Gray family.
But the Gray family’s housekeepers didn’t respect Claire because she was adopted, and often bullied her.
For instance, the housekeeper would deliberately not leave any food for Claire. And when she caught Claire sneaking into the kitchen to find something to eat, she would berate her loudly.
One time, Zane happened to witness this and grabbed the housekeeper by the collar:

That was the first time Claire met Zane, a big brother who was five years older than her, who stood up for her.

“I’ll marry you after college,” he’d panted against her lips.
It was just a casual statement made in their youth, but she took it to heart and believed it.
Claire curved her lips in self–mockery.
DING! Her phone suddenly rang, pulling her out of her memories.
It was Emma. [You probably know everything by now. Since that’s the case, we hope you
can attend our wedding next month.]

With the baby as leverage, Emma had finally dropped all pretense.
In the past, Claire would have called to confront her about why she was treating her this
way.
Because apart from Zane, Emma had been the most important person to Claire.
But now, none of it mattered.
She had decided to let go completely.
After all, they already had a child.
No matter how much she protested, she would be the biggest joke in everyone’s eyes.

If Zane wanted her gone forever? Fine.
