chapter 88- one step forward two steps back
The rest of the night was spent with the two of them being without each other, more than ususal.
“you didn’t need to give me such a heart attack earlier” Lucia said, stroking his hair. She smiled at him, though he couldn’t see her in the dead of the night.
He sighed, turning himself completely to face her. “I was going to wait till tomorrow till we talked about this” he sat up from the bed, effectively detangling himself from her as she followed to sit up to listen to him “Lucia, I really think its best we, breaking the bond is perfect”
She knew it was meant to happen, but she couldn’t stop the feeling she had, like cold water was being poured on her.
“I see” was all she said as she tried to gather her composure.

you understand where I am coming from yes?” he turned to looked at her. Somehow, his greyish white eyes pierced through the night, looking straight at her. “the kingdom, it needs me” and I would not be able to protect you. Without my powers, I am weak. He did not add that part, but he hoped she understood.

“of course. I know that” she said smiling at him. Deep down, Lucia wanted to be selfish, to tell him to to f**ck the kingdom to let them find another way to find another the way around the curse, but she couldn’t bring herself to say to say anything.
“I just have one question Helios. When you said you loved me, did you mean it? or was it just in the heat of the moment?” her vision suddenly became sharper in the barely lit
room.
He looked at her for a while, contemplating whether or not he should lie, by tomorrow, he
was going to have to turn off his emotions towards her because that was the only way he
could handle his rejection towards her
Lucia’s heart was racing a mile per minute, it was a good thing he did not have a wolf’s hearing or she would have being dying with embarrassment by now.
He slowly used his hands to find hers, maintaining eye contact.

chapter 88- one step forward two steps back
“I love you. I loved you in that heated moment” Lucia’s heart spade up “and I love you now and I hope I have the opportunity to love you tomorrow”
Lucia bowed her head, letting her hair cover her face
Lucia’s heart hammered against her chest as she sat right across him on the bed. Normally, he brought her a sense of calmness that she never understood, but now? her thoughts were screaming in her head, trying to escape all at once. her breath coming in ragged gasps. Helios’s words echoed in her mind, each syllable a weight dragging her deeper into a whirlpool of confusion and despair.
“your face shouldn’t be hidden by your hair you know. Don’t deny me the privilege of seeing your pretty face”
She had to get away. She couldn’t bear to be near him, not after what he’d confessed. But with each step she took, her resolve wavered, torn between the urgency of escape and the ache of his pleading gaze.
The night air was heavy with the scent of him, his sweet fragrance mingling with the bitter taste of regret. She definitely knew she was going to regret this in the morning, one way or the other. Lucia pressed a trembling hand to her lips, trying to stifle the sobs threatening to escape. She never thought the day would come when he or anyone would confess to her. She had expected him to deny it. she had already made out an excuse and everything but this? She could not think of what to say
But there was no time for self–recrimination, no time for anything but flight. She stood from the bed, not bothering to look back at Helios as she quickened her pace to the door, her footsteps a frantic rhythm against the wooden floor, each beat a desperate plea for escape. To self–sabotage.
And then she heard it–the sound of his voice, soft and low, calling out her name. She froze, her heart clenching in her chest. She couldn’t bear to face him, what if she made a fool of herself?
But still, she turned, her eyes meeting his across the moonlit expanse of the room.
“Lucia,” he whispered, his voice a fragile thread in the darkness. “Please, don’t go. Stay with me tonight.”
His words hung in the air between them, heavy with unspoken truths. And in that

moment, Lucia didn’t care if she was going to make a fool out of herself. With that voice, he could have told her to place her head on a guillotine and she honestly would have
done it.
She took a tentative step forward, her eyes never leaving his. And then another, and another, until she was standing before him, close enough to feel the warmth of his breath against her skin.
“I can’t,” she whispered, her voice barely more than a whisper. “I can’t stay, Helios. What of tomorrow, do we take a step a forward and a million steps back?”
His gaze faltered, he knew the answer to that already. He was indeed going to take a million steps back. But regardless, he reached out, his hand trembling but he stilled them as they cupped her cheek.
“I would never play with your feelings that way” it was selfish, but that was the only way he could for a night, be with her.
And in that moment, Lucia knew that she couldn’t deny him, couldn’t deny herself the solace of his embrace, if only for a few fleeting hours.
With a trembling sigh, she closed the distance between them, her arms wrapping around him in a desperate embrace. And as they stood there, entwined in the moonlight, Lucia knew that no matter what tomorrow brought, she would always cherish this night–the night she had his confession.
