Chapter 50: Apartment

Scruffles. I like that one. Can I take him home? Evie

Evie lay in the empty bed looking at the alarm clock, waiting for it to go off. After nearly three years of waking up in an empty bed, she should be used to it. She hated it. Finally, the alarm began to beep and she reached out and turned it off

She tried to keep up with her regular routine that Daniel and Cade had established for

her. It had changed slightly after she moved. Stretching at the bottom of the outdoor

stairs to her apartment, she put her earbuds in and ran towards the small gym. Once

there, she went through her regular workout and then jogged back home. After a quick

shower, she dressed in the walkin closet. Her make up, as usual, was light and natural

Slipping on her black wedges, she looked in the fulllength mirror and inspected herself

She stood at five foot four and a half. That half was important when it was what made you taller than one of your other sisters. But with her wedges, she was now an impressive

fivefoot seven. And a half. She was leggy, even for being short. And busty

Her light grey pencil skirt stopped just above her knees. The black and white sweater was

light weight but thick enough no one would see the corset underneath. It was her little secret under her clothes. She didn’t wear bras, she wore corsets. Todays was cream

colored and had garters with little bows at the end and her lace thong matched

Evie left her shoulder length strawberry blonde hair in waves down to her shoulders. Her

golden honey eyes sparkled with excitement for the first day of school. Her sweetheart lips were a light mauve and turned up. Looking for a little pop of color, she selected a chunky blue and gold necklace with matching earrings and bracelet

Approving of her appearance, she turned off the light and walked out into the oversized efficiency apartment. Old fashioned dressing screens separated her bedroom area from the living area. She had a simple queensized sleigh bed flanked by matching bedside tables. There were bookshelves lining one wall while the matching dresser and jewelry

curio were in the oversized closet

The bedding and curtains on the French doors were gifts from her parents when she moved in a few weeks ago. The bright ruby red satin comforter and coordinating red, black and white pillows were perfectly placed. The black satin curtains were pulled open revealing the white lace that had red at the bottom slowly fading into the white

The same curtains graced the two windows in the living area. The black couch sat in the middle of the room with her small white desk pushed up behind it. The TV hung on the wall facing both so she could watch while grading. Typically, it remained on the local PBS, music or documentaries. Her sisters and her got on the phone every week to watch Sons of Anarchy together. She did the same with her brother with soccer and rugby

Against the far wall sat a table that collapsed down to a small space of about a foot wide and three feet long. The matching chairs were folded up and nestled inside. It had been a flea market find that she and her sister, Jasmin, had stripped and restored. It was now stained a beautiful black lacquer and had been perfect in her dorm. She never expected it to be back in her living space

The kitchen was small and had a peninsula separating it from the living area. The hardwoodlook floors went through out the whole apartment. The bright white cabinets in the kitchen had black countertops and stainlesssteel appliances. Red pots hung on a small wrought iron pot rack above the peninsula

Her dishes were red and the bakeware white. The towels and utensils were a mix of the three colors. The rugs scattered throughout the apartment were gray and plush. The walls were white with black wainscoting and chair railings, trim and crown molding. She had paid an extra fee to be able to paint and trim the walls how she wanted them

Photos of family, friends and special places were scattered throughout the apartment. All were in silver frames of varying shapes, sizes and styles

At the end of the peninsula, a large urn sat. It had been custom made. They had lived together. Served together. Loved together. And then died together. She could not separate them after death. Daniel’s family had objected, as they had to the unconventional relationship. Cades family had not agreed with it, but they did not object. He had been happy, that was all that mattered

Both families had requested some ashes. Evie had complied. But it was a mix of both. Neither family knew this. Although Cades mother suspected. They still spoke frequently. Daniel’s family ignored her, certain that she somehow caused the incident that took him from this world

Evie picked up her bag from the back of the chair at her desk. Scruffles, the black cat she had adopted the day after the memorials, jumped on the back of the couch. She scratched him under his chin and he purred

Behave. She murmured as she walked towards the door. Pausing briefly at the peninsula, she gently touched the gray marble urn with their images and information on it. Next to it, the digital picture frame rotated through some of her favorite pictures. Some had all three of them. Some of her with one or the other, or the two of them. Some it was just Daniel or Cade. Some had other friends, coworkers or family members. But at least one of her men were in every frame

When she glanced at it, a picture of the two of them from their time aboard the Peleliu popped up. They had been friends before joining the navy. Became close while serving. And even closer after. The picture changed and she looked into her own happy and sparkling eyes. It was the day that she and Daniel were married in Mexico

They had decided that she would marry Daniel in an attempt to appease his very Christian family. Afterwards, they had gone to the little bar and the waitress had snapped the picture of them each kissing a cheek of hers. After that, they had gone to the hotel and not emerged until they had to go to the airport three days later

The picture started to change and she decided that she needed to leave, or she would not go to work
