“Abigail, how could you be so vicious?”
Abigail staggered backward, her lips trembling as she hastily came up with an excuse.
“Alexander, don’t listen to their nonsense.”
“Eleanor was the one who set the fire. I saw it with my own eyes!”
Alexander’s response was a resounding slap.
“My mother just told me it was you who set the fire. Other people might lie to me, but would
she?”
Abigail shrank back at his furious outburst, tears immediately streaming down her face.
“M–Maybe your mom is lying…”
She didn’t get to finish her sentence before Alexander slapped her to the ground.
Abigail looked utterly shocked, biting her lips hard and stammering her plea.
“Alexander! If my parents were still alive, seeing you treat me like this would break their hearts.”
Alexander stood frozen, his fists clenched tightly, but he made no further move.
He let out a long, weary sigh, and it seemed only then did he remember my presence. He reached out to grab me.
“Eleanor, I…”
“Can you stop blaming Abigail?”
I couldn’t help but smile bitterly.
Of course. The debt he felt toward Abigail’s parents was the sharpest weapon against him.

Chapter 6
Even after learning the truth, his first instinct was still to plead on her behalf.
I opened my mouth, my voice weak but firm.
“Alexander, we’re getting a divorce.”
His eyes instantly reddened, and he grabbed my hand, shaking it desperately.
“Eleanor, I misunderstood you. I was wrong.”
“Can’t we just not divorce? You’re the one I love!!”
I yanked my hand free from his grasp, stepped back, and looked him straight in the eyes.
“Alexander, the one you truly love is Abigail, not me.”
“I will pursue justice for my child, and I will make sure Abigail pays for what she’s done.”
Abigai collapsed to the ground, glared at me fiercely, as if she still had something to say, but I couldn’t be bothered to listen any longer.
“Don’t come looking for me unless it’s to sign the divorce papers.” I said.
Then I walked away without a backward glance.
The house was already a burnt mess. I found a random hotel and checked in.
I had barely rested when there was a loud knock at the door.
I opened it, and it was Alexander.
His expression was dark, exhaustion etched into every line of his face.
“Eleanor, can we talk?”
I looked at him, a hint of a smile curling my lips.
“Like I said, we have nothing to discuss except signing the divorce papers.”
The moment I finished speaking, his eyes turned red again,

He forced his way into the room, his voice trembling and thick with tears.
“Eleanor, I was wrong before. I did you wrong.
“Can you forgive me? Can we go back to how things were?”
I sighed, feeling nothing but resignation.
“And what about Abigail?”
Alexander’s eyes went blank as he stared at me. I continued.
“As I left Marie’s hospital room, I heard–Abigail’s pregnant. With your child, right?”
“Her theatrical sobs echoed down the hallway, impossible to ignore.”
Alexander’s body shook violently. After a long silence, he finally spoke, his voice tentative.
“I’ll make her get rid of it. It was just a mistake.‘

“Eleanor, I know I’ve hurt you. I know it’s too late to say this, but… just give me one more
chance.”
I shook my head.
When I was abandoned in that blazing fire, when my child was killed by his own hand–did
anyone ever think about giving me a chance?
I used to be trapped in the illusion of love, thinking that if I just tried harder, Alexander would eventually see my worth.
But what good did that do?
The happy moments we once had were long gone.
He was no longer the Alexander who would lower his head to make me smile.
And I was no longer the naive girl who would let herself be trampled on.
There was no going back.
Chapter 6
I turned to the table, picked up the freshly printed divorce agreement, and handed it to
Alexander.
“Sign it.”
Alexander snatched it from me, tears pouring down his face.
“Eleanor, does it really have to end like this?”
“We used to love each other so much…”
He choked up, unable to finish his sentence, but all I felt was exhaustion.
The Alexander I once knew was decisive and strong, someone who seemed like nothing in
the world could bring him down.
But now, he couldn’t even bring himself to sign his own name.
He stared into my eyes for several seconds before suddenly collapsing like a deflated
balloon.
“I really didn’t know… I didn’t know you were innocent.”
“Eleanor, it was all Abigail’s lies. I didn’t know…”
He sobbed like a child, but his tears stirred nothing in me.
“Alexander, whatever Abigail says, you believe her, don’t you?”
“If it weren’t for Benjamin, Marie and I would have already died in that fire.”
“Would you even have bothered to investigate why we died?”
“No. You would’ve claimed it was all an accident because Abigail would’ve begged you to.”
Alexander covered his face, unable to say a word.
At long last, he scrawled his name on the divorce papers.
