Chapter 11
I silently got up and went back to the kitchen to cook.
Emily followed me.
She awkwardly tried to help, but ended up cutting her hand with a fruit knife on the
counter.
The cut was deep, and blood was flowing out quickly.
Just then, her phone rang, and she asked me to answer it.
It was Jack calling, telling me Alan had gotten into an argument with a client who kept rejecting her proposal.
They clashed, and now things were a mess at the office.
Emily furrowed her brow as she looked at me.
She didn’t say a word, but I could read her perfectly.
I quickly helped her clean up the wound and we headed to the office together.
She didn’t say anything the entire way.
We arrived to find Alan sitting outside the office, out of breath, complaining that the client was bullying her.
They had changed the proposal three or four times and still weren’t happy–just nitpicking.
Emily’s expression grew darker.
Ignoring her injury, and despite my objections, she marched straight up to the client and slapped him.
Emily, who was always polite, actually slapped someone in public, like a madwoman.
The client was stunned for a second, but then his female assistants rushed in and started

pulling at her.
Alan stood there, watching, until the male clients rushed toward him, at which point he
screamed and ran off.
He’d been complaining about back pain earlier, but now he was jumping around like nothing happened.
Seeing the scene, I calmly called the police.
Then I had Jack and the security staff move in to control the situation.
In the chaos, I stepped forward and shielded Emily.
It wasn’t just someone else who lost their temper–it was me too.
Someone grabbed scissors off the table and stabbed me.
I felt a sharp pain in my abdomen as blood splattered everywhere.
As I lost consciousness, I seemed to catch a glimpse of myself as a teenager, cornered in the
bathroom.
Back then, Emily had stood in front of me holding a mop.
And now, I guess I was paying her back.
It was over between us.
I woke up again in the hospital.
Jack, who had been by my side, quickly called for a nurse when he saw I was awake.
After the nurse checked me out, the police walked in.
They said that since Emily had struck first, no matter how badly I was injured, we were at
fault.
The other side refused to settle.

I asked calmly, “What about Emily?”
Jack rolled his eyes and said,
“She’s fine. Just some minor cuts.”
“She’s being held at the station and wants to see you.”
The police spoke up at that point:
“Mr. Lucas, they say if you apologize, they might consider not pursuing charges against
Emily.”
I sighed and told them I’d go.
With a bandage wrapped around my waist, I followed them to the station.
Emily and the clients were all holed up in the mediation room.
When I walked in, Emily tried to stand, but the handcuffs on the table kept her seated.
She just sat there, silently watching me.
