Chapter 7
Alone at home, Cersei saw dozens of messages from Rachel. She typed a short reply:
“I’m fine. Made it home safe. Don’t worry.”
After hitting send, she checked her chats and noticed Louis pinned at the top.
Not one message asking if she was okay. Not a single call.
It was clear–just like he said, he genuinely didn’t care about her.
In that moment, Cersei’s already broken heart burned to ashes. There was nothing left to rekindle.
Louis didn’t come home for the next week.
Cersei didn’t bother asking where he was. Instead, she quietly inventoried their assets for the divorce settlement.
Occasionally, she’d scroll through Instagram and spot Louis in Rachel’s vacation photos.
His hand with those distinctive knuckles was peeling shrimp.
His smiling face reflected in Rachel’s pupils as he took her photo.
His name scratched beside Rachel’s beach drawing…
Cersei scrolled through each post, hitting “like” on every single one.
Days passed until her lawyer called.
“Ms. Blanchel, today’s the final day of the divorce waiting period. When can you come pick up the certificate?”
Cersei had waited for this day forever. She immediately went out and collected both divorce papers.
Leaving the law firm, she was about to deliver Louis’s copy when she got a call from one of his friends.
“Cersei, Louis is drunk. Can you come get him?”
She confirmed the address and rushed over.
At the private room door, she was about to push it open. But then she heard Louis’s drunken voice.
“Traveling with Rachel… it’s been the happiest time I’ve had since getting married. Just the two of us, no more pretending. We can just love each other freely. God, I wish I could freeze time like that. Keep her with me forever. But what I want most is just… a fucking impossible dream.”
The raw desperation in his voice made even his friends uncomfortable.
“Dude, stop talking nonsense. Cersei’s on her way–she’ll be crushed if she hears this. She loves you so much. She left her family behind to stay in New York with you. You’re everything to her.”
“Seriously, man. Cersei gave up a chance to study abroad to marry you. She’s been nothing but devoted. When you work late, she stayed up to make you soup. After your car accident, she took care of you for a month.”
“That time you got wasted at that conference and your stomach was killing you? She jumped on the first flight to be there for you…”
“Look, we know you’re crazy about Rachel, but she’s your sister. It’s just not possible. Appreciate what you have. If you lose Cersei, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”
Hearing their advice, Louis gave a bitter laugh.
