Chapter 5

Emma silently watched the scene of them kissing. Words crowded her throat, but when she tried to speak, they lodged there, and she couldn’t utter a single sound.

Vivian’s expression changed dramatically. She hurriedly pushed Marcus away and rushed forward.[]

“Emma, you–you’re up? Why didn’t you call me? Just now, Marcus and I were discussing what gift to buy to cheer you up after your serious injury, and then a bug flew into my hair. Marcus was just helping me get it out…‘

She rambled incoherently, frantically signaling to Marcus to back up her story.

His face instantly turned cold. He pressed his lips together, saying nothing.

Seeing Vivian almost in tears, he finally nodded once, his voice icy.[]

“Yes.”

Emma knew Vivian was doing this to preserve their seven–year friendship.[]

After discovering the deception, Emma had indeed hated Vivian for a while, unsure how to face her.[]

But having decided to leave, both love and hate had dissipated. She no longer cared.[]

So even knowing they were putting on an act for her benefit, she didn’t call them out.[]

She suppressed the emotions welling up in her heart and forced a smile.[]

“I see.”]]

Unaware of her thoughts, Vivian assumed Emma hadn’t seen everything. She quickly linked arms with Emma, acting coquettish.[]

“Emma, where were you going? Can I come with you?“]

Emma pulled out the examination form. “The doctor wants me to get some tests.“[]

Vivian immediately offered to accompany her, then led her away from that place.[]

The test results came back quickly. The doctor recommended a few more days of IV treatment, so Emma had to stay in the hospital.[]

Vivian visited occasionally, and whenever she appeared, Marcus would too.

They always claimed it was a coincidence, but Emma knew well that the person he really wanted to see wasn’t her.[]

After all, when he cut fruit, he would give the sweetest pieces to Vivian.[]

The patient meals he brought were all Vivian’s favorite dishes.] 

When the two women chatted, he would silently stare out the window, watching Vivian through the reflection in the glass:

Emma observed everything he did.[]

Sometimes she felt heartache, but she never showed it. Because she knew she was gradually moving past this relationship, and her wounded heart was slowly healing.

One day, she would completely let go.[]

On the day of discharge, Marcus personally came to pick her up and even suggested they go on a date.[]

Hearing him initiate an invitation for the first time, she was puzzled, not understanding what he was up to.[]

He first took her to see a movie, then shopping, Marcus took her to buy jewelry, bags, and clothes, picking out styles he thought suited her. 

“This outfit is too bright for you.“]

“These bracelets have great clarity and complement your skin tone.”

After marriage, although the couple would occasionally go out together, it was usually at Emma’s suggestion, with Marcus merely accompanying her.

No matter what she liked, he rarely commented, only silently paying with his card.[]

So watching him seriously selecting styles and offering opinions felt completely bizarre to her–like someone had performed a body swap with the real Marcus.[]

The saleswoman looked enviously at Emma, rarely seeing such a handsome and patient customer.[]

“Ma’am, your husband not only shops with you and picks out gifts, but he’s so attentive to your feelings. Having such a doting husband must make you very happy.”

Watching him smoothly pay with his black card, Emma said nothing, her mind racing.

Happy?

If she didn’t know he loved Vivian, she might have felt happy.

But after everything she’d experienced, seeing these exquisite, expensive gifts left her unmoved.[]

She understood that Marcus was trying to compensate her with money because he couldn’t give her love.

What he could give her, she didn’t need.]]

And what she wanted, he couldn’t offer.]

Perhaps this marriage had been a mistake from the beginning.]]
