Chapter 7
After returning home alone, Emma saw dozens of messages from Vivian. She typed a brief reply:]
“I’m fine. I’m home. Don’t worry.“]
After sending it, she checked her notifications and saw Marcus’s name pinned at the top–not a single message asking about her wellbeing, not one phone call.]
It seemed he truly didn’t care about her, just as he’d said.[]
In that moment, Emma’s already broken heart burned completely to ashes, and never to reignite.[]
For the next week, Marcus didn’t return home.[]
Emma didn’t ask where he’d gone. Instead, she quietly inventoried and handled the property to be divided after the divorce.]].
Occasionally, she’d see Vivian’s Instagram posts about traveling, always with glimpses of Marcus’s presence.[]
His clearly defined hand, visible as he peeled a bowl of shrimp.[]
Vivian’s pupils reflecting his smiling face as he photographed her.[]
His initials left beside her drawing on the beach.]
Emma scrolled through each post, liking countless photos.
As days passed, the lawyer finally called.[]
“Ms. Watson, today is the last day of the divorce cooling–off period. When would you like to pick up your divorce certificate?“[]
Emma had waited for this day for so long. She immediately went out and retrieved both copies of the divorce certificate.[]
Leaving the law office, she was about to bring the other certificate to Marcus when she received a call from one of his friends.[]
“Emma, Marcus is drunk. Could you come pick him up?”
After getting the address, she headed over.
As she approached the private room door, she overheard Marcus’s alcohol–laden voice.[]
“Those days traveling with Vivian were the happiest time since my marriage. She was the only one by my side, and we didn’t have to pretend anymore. We could express our love for each other freely. How I wish time could freeze forever, so Vivian could belong to me forever. But my most cherished wish remains an unattainable dream “1
The despair in his voice was so palpable that even his friends looked uncomfortable.[]
“Marcus, stop talking nonsense. Emma will be here soon. If she hears you speaking like this, she’ll be devastated. She loves you so much–she stayed in New York away from her parents just for you. You’re all she has and you can’t let her down.“[]
“Yes, Emma gave up a hard–earned opportunity to study abroad just to marry you. All these years, she’s been completely devoted. When you worked late, she’d stay up making soup for you. When you had that car accident, she took care of you non–stop for a month. When you got drunk at a business dinner and had stomach pain, she immediately flew to see you…“]
“We know you only have eyes for Vivian, but you’re siblings–it’s impossible forever. You should cherish what’s in front of you. If you miss out now, you’ll regret it later.”
Hearing their advice, Marcus gave a soft, bitter laugh.[]
Regret? In my life. I’ve only regretted one thing. Three years ago, I shouldn’t have given in to Vivian’s plea and shouldn’t have gotten married. If I hadn’t, would Vivian and I still have a chance to be together?!”
