Chapter 17
In the following time, James showed Emma through his actions that he was serious.[]
He took her to the city’s most famous restaurant, in a ninety–ninth–floor private room where it felt like they could touch the clouds and moon with outstretched hands–a romance that took her breath away.[]
“Sis, come over here.”
James beckoned from the floor–to–ceiling window. As Emma approached, the sky suddenly lit up with dazzling fireworks, exploding before her eyes.
The dreamlike colors filled her with delight, her eyes brightening with surprise.[]
When the fireworks ended, James carefully took her hand–without any further movement, simply holding it as they walked to the table.
They also went shopping. James seemed to know exactly what she’d always longed for, taking her to various stores.
es.]
At first, Emma felt self–conscious, but James had a way with words. No matter what clothes or accessories she tried on, he could analyze their merits and flaws, ultimately concluding that she made everything look beautiful.[]
Marcus had never so attentively accompanied her on dates. The few times he had, they’d been Vivian’s concessions.
Now James was filling those gaps in her heart, quietly shifting her feelings.[]
Later, they went to the seaside.[]
James took three days off to travel with her. They watched sunrises and sunsets from a beachside cottage, observing the tide’s ebb and flow, as if all beautiful moments converged there.]]
“Wanna play in the water?” James asked with a smile. Then she nodded.[]
Emma couldn’t swim, so she only waded at the beach’s edge. She chased and splashed water with James, genuinely laughing for the first time in ages.[]
Suddenly, a wave crashed over her, catching her off guard. In her panic, James immediately grabbed her and pulled her into his arms.
Her face pressed against his solid chest, her cheeks suddenly burning red. Only then did she truly realize that James had grown up. He was showing her through his actions that he wasn’t her little brother, but a man pursuing her.
“Are you alright, sis?” James bent down with concern, his lips brushing her ear.[]
Tha: warmth seemed to startle her, and Emma pushed him away forcefully, but James just smiled with curved eyes–the little troublemaker had done it deliberately.[]
Emma felt both embarrassed and annoyed, but fortunately, James didn’t press further. For the rest of their time, he respectfully maintained boundaries.[] As they were heading to a nearby restaurant after tiring themselves out, they unexpectedly ran into Marcus and Vivian.[]
“Emma! I’ve finally found you. I’ve missed you so much!”
Vivian waved enthusiastically, her face adorned with the same sweet smile as always. But Emma’s relaxed expression immediately tensed at the sight of them. She responded coolly:
“What’s up?”
As if stung by her attitude, Vivian pouted and ran to Emma’s side, linking arms and swaying them.[]
“Emma, what’s wrong? Are you in a bad mood? My brother sometimes doesn’t know how to talk to girls properly, but you didn’t have to divorce him in anger! Look, I’ve dragged him here to apologize. Just come home with us, okay? Didn’t we promise to be BFFS forever?”
Marcus chimed in, “Vivian’s right. We’ve both come to see you. What more do you want?“[]
Looking at her innocent face and naive tone, Emma couldn’t help but laugh coldly.
In the past, she’d been too blind to see through their act of pretending to care for her while continually hurting her. Now, despite being divorced, they still acted as if she were the unreasonable one.
Emina clenched her fists. Each time she thought her heart couldn’t be hurt anymore, yet encounters like this still left her feeling suffocated.[]
She looked at Vivian and asked quietly:
“Vivian, do you remember I donated bone marrow to you?“]]
Vivian nodded, smiling. “Of course I remember! If it weren’t for you, I’d have died. That’s why I’ll always come find you, no matter what happens, Emma.“–
“What if I said that my condition for remarrying Marcus is that you two never see each other again?”
Vivian’s expression changed instantly. Before she could respond, Marcus lunged forward, fury blazing in his eyes.
“What the actual fuck, Emma?!”
