Chapter 21
Given their business relationships, the Watsons agreed to his request, allowing them some time alone before heading to the venue.
Now with just the two of them in the house, Marcus could no longer contain himself. He stepped forward, calling softly:[]
“Emma…” His voice carried a complex mix of emotions, laced with pain.[]
But Emma showed no reaction, merely nodding politely.
“What is it? Please be quick–I need to get to my engagement party. Today’s important.“[]
Her voice once overflowed with love, but now Marcus felt nothing from it.]
Panic rising, he looked at her pleadingly.
“Emma, I’m sorry. I was wrong to ignore you for Vivian’s sake. I shouldn’t have hurt you. Can you forgive me?“]]
Emma remained detached, showing neither hatred nor joy. Since their last encounter when everything had been laid bare, she had already found peace. She nodded lightly.
see. I honestly don’t care about any of that anymore. It’s getting late–I need to go.”
Marcus’s heart sank, as if cut by a knife, his face turning pale.]]
“Are you
still holding a grudge? I truly realize my mistake. I came back not just to apologize but to reconcile with you. I admit I thought I loved my sister, but during these three years, I’ve fallen completely in love with you. Emma, please give me one more chance?”
The man’s eyes reddened, his earnest pleas suggesting he might cry for her at any moment. This was the first time Emma had seen Marcus like this. But it was too late. I’ve already stopped loving you–why can’t you understand?]]
Emma didn’t answer, simply staring at him with calm eyes devoid of any love for him–not even hatred remained.]]
The man’s chest tightened, making it difficult to breathe. His voice trembled as he inched closer to the woman he loved.
“I know I was wrong. Emma, believe me, I’ll never hurt you again. I’ll make it up to you. I’ll love you properly…“]]
She was right before him, like his salvation. Marcus knelt at her feet, pulling Emma into his embrace.
Once proud and aloof, he now knelt, begging, ready to sacrifice everything to make her see the sincerity in his heart–filled with regret and suffering.]
But Enima no longer needed this.[]
She sighed again, her tone completely flat, as if stating an immutable fact:[]
“Marcus, today is my engagement party.“[]
Her soft body no longer felt as warm as he remembered; instead, it pierced him until he bled. But Marcus refused to let go, his trembling voice breaking with sobs, warm tears dampening the hem of her elegant dress.[]
“Emma, don’t go… please don’t go…”
His voice was nearly a plea as he held her tightly. Just as Emma was growing impatient, someone pushed open the door, pulling Marcus away, forcing him to stumble backward.[]
About to flare up in anger, he heard Emma’s delighted voice:[]
“James! Why are you here?”
“I was worried you’d reminisce with your ex–husband for too long and be late, so I came to check.“[]
Though James spoke politely, his tone held no warmth toward Marcus, sweeping over him like ice.[]
This was the first time Linia had seen her brother angry, but she was genuinely relieved James had arrived. Otherwise, she didn’t know how long Marcus would have kept her trapped. She didn’t want to miss the engagement party over this.[]
Seeing Emma, who had been ice–cold toward him, now smiling with relief at another man, Marcus felt almost insane with jealousy. These smiles once belonged only to him![]
Controlling his emotions, he spoke calmly
“I know you’re the Watsons adopted son. If you marry your sister, you’ll face tremendous criticism, and Emma has always loved me–she’s only come back because we had an argument. I can give you half of all my assets, enough for you to live luxuriously for the rest of your life. If you’re smart, you’ll step aside and let me have Emma back.”
The Shaws‘ wealth was no less than the Watsons‘. Such an offer would be an incredible opportunity for most people, but James wasn’t moved in the slightest, even scoffing.
“You think everyone is like Vivian Shaw, only caring about benefits and status?“]
“Let me tell you, Marcus–my parents know about me and my sister, and they’ve approved. I won’t touch any of the Watson family assets in the future; I’ll start my own business and give my sister happiness. I love only her–no amount of money compares.”
“Besides, I’ve loved her for a very long time. Thanks to you, I now have a chance to be with her.”
Marcus’s brow furrowed with anger, but James continued, each word sharp as a blade.
