Chapter 24
Callias locked her in a windowless storage room at what seemed like an abandoned warehouse.
“Sit tight,” he said, taking her phone and bag. “Once I get your passport, we’re leaving Italy for good.”
He walked out, the heavy door clicking shut behind him.
As his footsteps faded, Skylar forced herself to breathe, her nails digging into her palms. Think. There had to be a way out.
Then- different footsteps. Heels on concrete.
She rushed to the door, knocking frantically.
The footsteps stopped.
“Where’s he taking you?” Victoria’s voice came through the door.
Skylar’s hope dimmed. Of course. Victoria must have followed him here.
After everything – the broken engagement, his rejection – she still couldn’t let go.
Maybe that was her chance.
“Denmark,” Skylar said carefully. “He wants to get married there. As if I’d ever agree.”
Victoria’s laugh was bitter. “Marriage? He’s completely lost it.”
“Funny, I thought you’d be happy he chose me over you.”
The bait worked.
“He was using me to get back at my mother. That’s why I came to Florence – to start over. My fiancé’s here. We’re announcing our engagement next month at my mom’s visit. I won’t let Callias ruin everything I’m building here.”
Silence stretched out.
Skylar’s heart pounded, but she had to play this right.
“Look, I heard about your broken engagement. Get out while you can. He’s dangerous-”
“Shut up!” Victoria snapped. “I’ve known him my whole life. You’re nothing. If you don’t want him, just stay away!”
Exactly what Skylar needed to hear.
“I want to, but he has my passport. Please – just help me contact my fiancé. I’ll disappear completely. Callias will be all yours.”

The silence felt different this time.
Skylar waited, knowing she’d won.

“What’s the number?”
