Chapter 4: Sending a Coffin at
the Wedding
Ryan Lewis stood there rigidly, not saying a word.
Lila Garcia raised her voice, “You finally said something sensible. We’re all family; shouldn’t the sister give way to the younger sister? Think of it as a wedding gift from you to your sister.”
I laughed coldly, looking at my stepmother, and suddenly spoke softly, “Then I should give her one more thing.”
“What are you giving?” Lila Garcia asked.
I said, “I’ll give her a coffin to display at the wedding.”
“Flora!” Lila Garcia’s face turned dark with rage, staring at me, unable to find her voice.
I smiled and explained even more gently, “In ancient times, when a woman got married, her family was supposed to prepare a coffin

as part of the dowry, which would accompany the bride to her husband’s home. As the elder sister, giving this as a wedding gift follows the customs perfectly, doesn’t it?”
My words were reasonable enough that they
couldn’t find any flaws to argue against, leaving them speechless.
Just like when I set off firecrackers earlier, even
though I was clearly celebrating and gloating, with a hint of cursing Sophia Garcia, I claimed it was to drive away bad luck. What could they do
about it?
For so many years, they had bullied me when I was younger, never allowing me to seek justice.
Now it was their turn to taste the bitterness of
this stifled anger!
Lila Garcia’s face flushed red with anger as she pointed towards the door, “Flora, get out! Get out!”
As if that didn’t release her frustration, she turned to my scumbag dad to vent, “Andrew Garcia! Look at the daughter you raised!

Heartless and venomous! She curses my daughter, and you do nothing!”
Andrew Garcia was equally furious. Before Lila Garcia finished speaking, he stormed toward me, furious.
Ryan Lewis tensed up and stepped in quickly, “Uncle Andrew, Flora didn’t mean that.”
Andrew Garcia was blocked but continued
to point at me, ordering, “Apologize to your sister!”
How could I possibly apologize? I firmly argued, “What did I say wrong? You’re the one who doesn’t understand our local customs, and now you’re blaming-”
Before I could finish, Andrew Garcia suddenly raised his hand and went to slap me.
But Ryan Lewis stepped in front of him, blocking the blow. The slap landed hard on Ryan Lewis’s head, causing his hair to fly up.
Sophia Garcia let out a sharp scream, “Dad! What are you doing?!”

Ryan Lewis seemed a bit dazed as he tried to refocus, continuing to block Andrew Garcia, “Uncle Andrew, hitting won’t solve anything. This is ultimately my fault for not soothing Sophia. Just give me some time, and I’ll handle.
it.”
Andrew Garcia, already plagued with health. issues like hypertension and diabetes, turned red in the face with rage, clearly in pain.
He panted a command, “You better make
things right with her. If this happens again, I’ll break her legs!”
Ryan Lewis nodded frantically and then turned to me, speaking softly, “Flora, let’s step outside
and talk.”
“No need, I have nothing to say to you.”
I turned to leave, but he grabbed my arm,
“Flora, this attitude won’t solve anything. We’re family; can’t we discuss things nicely?”
Family?

Those words disgusted me, and I replied, “You’re not worthy to be my family.”
With that, I lifted his hand that was gripping my wrist and commanded, “Let go.”
“We need to talk.”
“I said let go!” I struggled hard, but he wouldn’t release me. In my anger, I raised my other hand and slapped him hard across the face.
With a loud “smack,” everyone in the room.
stared at us in shock.
Then Sophia Garcia cried out, “Flora, what are you doing?! How dare you hit Ryan! If I want him to marry me, you should take out your grievances on me, not him!”
I looked over at the hospital bed and smiled, “Does hitting a scumbag need a reason? As for you, let the Devil take care of you–no need for me to dirty my hands.”
I didn’t care how angry or menacing they looked; I turned and slammed the door behind.

Back in the car, I sat there dazed for a long while, my mind slowly settling down.
Thinking about having such a family, an overwhelming sense of sadness washed over
- me.
I had hoped that meeting Ryan Lewis, the man I loved, would heal the wounds in my heart.
Never did I expect that it would be him who dealt me the most severe blow.
Remembering the sacrifices I had made over the years to help him with his illness made me feel as though my insides were being torn apart
by wolves.
Suddenly, my phone rang, pulling me out of the gloom.
I picked it up to see it was my best friend, Maya.
“Hey.”
“Mrs.Lewis, did you forget we had plans for lunch today? Where are you? Don’t tell me Ryan

Lewis is keeping you locked up!” Maya teased, unaware of what I had been through in the past couple of days.
I frowned slightly, finally remembering our lunch date from a few days ago. We were supposed to discuss the wedding rehearsal.
“I’ll be there shortly.”
The wedding rehearsal was off, but I needed to let my friend know.
When I saw Maya at the restaurant, she instantly picked up on my mood.
“What’s wrong? You look awful. Did you have another fight with your family?” Maya asked
with concern.
She knew just how terrible my relationship with my family was.
I didn’t answer her question, instead calmly said, “Maya, the wedding is off.”
Maya was pouring tea, and at my words, she looked up in shock, pausing for a moment.

“What are you talking about? The wedding is next week; how could it be off?”
forced a smile, feeling numb inside. “To be precise, the wedding isn’t off, but I’m no longer
the bride.”
Maya put down the teapot, stood up, and came over the table, placing her hand on my forehead. “Are you sick? Have you lost your mind? Stop talking nonsense.”
I pulled her hand down and made her sit back down, fearing she might fall over in shock. I briefly summarized what had happened in the past couple of days.
Maya’s eyes widened, and her mouth dropped open in disbelief.
“Seriously?! Is Ryan Lewis crazy? Sophia Garcia’s face basically screams ‘scheming woman‘–how can he not see that? He’s not afraid of being humiliated in front of all those guests at the wedding? It’s like he wants to destroy himself with this stunt!”
Maya was indignant, her voice rising high,

“I can’t take this! I’m calling him to give him a piece of my mind!”
With her fiery personality, she was even more intense than I was, and without hesitation, she picked up her phone to call Ryan Lewis.
I felt utterly drained, quietly sipping my tea without stopping her.
“Ryan Lewis, have you been spelled by Sophia Garcia? What does her terminal illness have to do with you? Flora has been with you for six years, and how much has she sacrificed to treat your illness? If it weren’t for her being your blood bank, you should have been dead long ago! Ungrateful bastard!”
“And when did you start seeing Sophia Garcia? You two even slept together, did you? I’ve seen scumbags before, but none as damned disgraceful as you! You’re a public figure–don’t you care about the wedding being a total joke?”
Maya continued her relentless rant for a solid five or six minutes until a server came over to

gently remind her to lower her voice.
I didn’t want to make a scene, so I got up, snatched her phone, and hung up.
“Why did you hang up? I wasn’t done! Not only does Ryan Lewis need to be scolded, but that hateful woman deserves those words too! Just
because she has a terminal illness, she thinks
she can steal her sister’s fiancé?”
Maya was fuming, her temper nearly boiling
over.
I quickly poured her a cup of tea to calm her down. “Let it go; don’t disturb others while they’re eating.”
Maya glanced around at the curious stares before finally tempering her rage.
“What is Ryan Lewis thinking? Does he love Sophia Garcia?” Maya pondered, both curious and distressed.
I shook my head, “I don’t know, but he
definitely doesn’t love me.”

Otherwise, how could he do something so absurd, bizarre, and shameless?
“Sophia Garcia is definitely psychologically disturbed. She has to compete with you for
everything over the years. Can’t Ryan Lewis see
that?”
I forced a smile, “He always thinks I’m overreacting and holding too deep a bias against Sophia Garcia.”
Maya was so furious that she downed several cups of tea. Then she suddenly asked, “Does he know that Sophia and Avery is your half–siblings?”
“I’m not sure. I’ve never mentioned it to him. He might know, or maybe he doesn’t.”
After all, it’s family matters; who would bring
those up for no reason?
Even with the person you love the most, you
can’t lay bare all the ugly sides of your family.
Otherwise, when that day comes when love fades, those scandals could become weapons.

for the other person to hurt you.
“Really? He didn’t know?” Maya smirked meaningfully. “I’m actually looking forward to the day Ryan Lewis sees Sophia Garcia’s true colors; he’ll probably be on his knees crying in regret.”
I smiled and remained silent.
Whether he regretted it or not had nothing to
do with me anymore.
After lunch, Maya comforted me, saying, “At least you’ll receive some compensation from the company. He’s just a trashy man; let him go. Focus on your career now.”
Her mentioning the company reminded me that there were still some procedures left to change the legal entity.
“You’re right; I shouldn’t be down because of a man. Don’t worry, I’m fine. It’s actually lucky to recognize a scumbag early on.”
After saying goodbye to Maya, I scheduled an appointment with Ryan Lewis to handle the

legal entity change in the afternoon.
He readily agreed.
When I saw him, half of his face still bore a
handprint, which only made his handsome. looks appear more comical.
“Hurry up; let’s get this done so we can head to get the divorce certificate,” I urged quietly as I noticed he was walking at a relaxed pace.
It had only been a month since we got the marriage certificate; had I known, we shouldn’t have queued so early on that day..
Ryan Lewis looked at me with a pensive expression, his mouth moving as if he wanted
to say something but held back.
Once we left Secretary of State, we headed straight for the City Clerk’s Office.
To our surprise, once we arrived, we learned that you need to make an appointment to file for divorce and then submit the materials.
After that, there would be a thirty–day

cooling–off period, and if both parties still insisted on divorcing after that period, they could then apply for the divorce certificate.
I felt frustrated and anxious and pulled out my phone to make an appointment, only to find
that the earliest I could get was an afternoon
half a month later.
This meant that when Ryan Lewis was marrying Sophia Garcia, I would still be his legal wife.
What the hell is this mess!?
Seeing my temper reach its peak, Ryan Lewis lowered his voice and gently said, “There’s no rush; Sophia Garcia hasn’t pressured me about
it.”
I suddenly looked up at him, startling him.
I glared at him for a moment, then laughed and asked, “Not pressuring you? Isn’t she afraid of waiting until that day never comes?”
Ryan Lewis’s expression stiffened.
After all, with divorce being so complicated, as

long as I didn’t cooperate, it could take a year or more to finalize.
Even if Sophia Garcia became the bride, legally speaking, she wouldn’t be a wife–she could
only be considered a mistress.
Ryan Lewis didn’t answer the question, took a step forward, and still spoke gently, “Then let’s
not get divorced. That way, we won’t have to deal with remarriage later.”
I was extremely surprised by this remark,
staring at him in disbelief.
Even now, he still confidently believed that once Sophia Garcia was gone, I’d get back together with him?
