Maxwell
“If you insist that she is your mate, then let us follow our customs and traditions. Let her undergo our basic ritual. You, of all people, know that a weak female cannot be the queen of our pack. If you want everyone to accept her, let her prove she can bear the title.”
I locked eyes with Elder Zane as he spoke. He was right, technically. But I knew his words weren’t motivated by tradition…they were rooted in his belief that Delilah would fail. If only he knew what we were truly dealing with.
The room buzzed with murmurs as others nodded in agreement. I had no issue with Delilah undergoing the ritual, even though I knew her beast is yet to surface. But after what I witnessed today? Their ignorance was almost laughable. We weren’t dealing with an ordinary Lycan here but something far more powerful, something even I struggled to comprehend.
“Your Majesty.” Rosa stood and bowed respectfully. My gaze flicked to her, then to Cross, who had remained silent throughout the meeting. He looked composed, detached, as if this discussion held no weight for him.
“I also believe our future queen should undergo the ritual, Rosa said. “It will earn her respect. However, given her current circumstances, I suggest we delay the ritual by a week. That should provide enough time to prepare her. If you agree, the elders should have no objections either.”
She returned to her seat, her tone calm and measured.
“Very well,” I said. “The ritual will take place next Tuesday Rosa, you will use this time to prepare my queen. I will introduce her formally to everyone this weekend at the breakfast gathering. Until then, this meeting is adjourned.”
The council bowed before leaving the room, one by one. Only Rosa and Cross stayed behind. Once the door shut, I addressed them.
“Now, tell me about the intruders,” I demanded.
“As I said earlier, they’re Lycans,” Cross began. “But they used magic. That’s what doesn’t sit right with me.”
“Your Majesty,” Rosa added, “these Lycans aren’t special on their own. The magic they used was provided by a witch…I recognized it immediately. That’s also why they fled.”
“Do you think this witch could be someone local? Or is this magic tied to the rogues we’ve encountered before?” I asked, leaning forward.
Rosa shook her head. “It’s difficult to say. The magical residue left behind was faint, which tells me the spell was cast from a distance. It’s likely the witch isn’t near our territory, but their influence still reaches us.”
Cross frowned. “That’s a dangerous advantage. If they can strike without stepping foot into our borders, we’re dealing with a more strategic enemy than we thought.”
-I exhaled, processing their words. Before I could respond, Cross spoke again.
“I heard your mate used magic to burn some rogues today. Is that true?” His tone carried a hint of disbelief. “It’s true,” I confirmed.
“Then based on what we’ve observed,” he continued, “there’s a strong chance your mate is connected to the same group of Lycans troubling our pack. If that’s the case, her magic could also be influenced by a witch.”
“No,” Rosa interrupted firmly. “While I don’t fully understand what she is, the energy she radiates is ancient…far beyond anything a witch could manipulate.”

“I agree,” I said. “I saw it with my own eyes, and I was stunned.”

Cross leaned back in his chair. “If that’s the case, how can she perform the ritual without hurting anyone? She could roast someone’s child.”
“She won’t,” Rosa assured him. “That’s why I suggested training her before the ritual. She’s still coming to terms with her powers. She hasn’t shifted, yet she possesses abilities I’ve never seen before. She needs basic training to control them and to differentiate between an enemy and an opponent during the contest.”
Cross looked skeptical but said nothing. I could tell he still arbored doubts, though Rosa’s confidence seemned to pacify him for now.
“What do you make of the fact that she hasn’t shifted?” I asked Rosa. “She’s past the age for her first shift, yet her powers…”
“They don’t come from her beast,” Rosa interjected. “That’s why she hasn’t shifted. Whatever she is, her strength is not tied to the moon or our Lycan lineage. It’s something else entirely. Something ancient.”
“That doesn’t answer why the goddess paired her with me, I muttered, running a hand through my hair.
Rosa smiled faintly. “Maybe it does. The goddess rarely gives us what we expect, but she always gives us what we need.”
Cross snorted. “Philosophy aside, if Delilah’s powers are as strong as you say, she’ll draw more enemies than allies. The Lycans we fought today were likely just the beginning. You need to be prepared for more attacks…and for the possibility that someone is targeting her specifically”
The room fell into a heavy silence as his words sank in. He was right. Delilah’s powers made her a beacon, and that put her…and by extension, the entire pack…in danger.
“I’ll strengthen the patrols,” I said finally. “And Rosa, I’ll rely on you to ensure Delilah is prepared for the ritual. She needs to be strong, not just physically, but mentally.”
“She will be,” Rosa promised.
I nodded, then sighed. “Anything else I should know about these intruders?”
“They seemed coordinated,” Cross replied. “Too coordinated for mere rogues. If I didn’t know better, I’d say they were part of a larger force. A pack, perhaps. But they were careful not to reveal any insignias or signs of allegiance.”
“Which means they’re hiding something,” I concluded. “We’ll need to find out what.”
Rosa and Cross exchanged a look, and I could tell they shared my unease. The situation was spiraling into something far more complex than I had anticipated.
“Maxwell, where are you?” Delilah’s voice echoed in my mind through the mate bond.
“I’m close by, finishing a meeting. How are you feeling?” I replied.
“I’m fine. I just wanted you to know…I heard everything. The entire conversation in your meeting. I’m ready to support you in any way.”
My heart sank. She’d heard everything?
“Yes, I heard everything,” she said, chuckling softly, her voice teasing in my mind. “And in case you forgot, I can hear your thoughts too.”
I couldn’t help but laugh with her. “I’ll be with you soon,” promised, cutting the link.

- SHOCKING ANNOUNCEMENT
I turned to Cross and Rosa. “Delilah just informed me she overheard our meeting. Every word.”
Cross looked startled, but Rosa seemed unsurprised.
“If she can hear everyone’s thoughts,” Cross muttered, “then we might be in serious trouble.”
