Chapter 74 He Was Used
Michael thought. Could that woman really be Camila?
Michael was about to mention it to Harry, but just as the words reached his lips, he swallowed them back down.
Even though he had been focused on academic research lately, he hadn’t been entirely out of the loop regarding the Jackson family’s affairs.
In just two months since her release from prison, Camila had been hospitalized multiple times–each time with severe injuries. The doctors and nurses at the hospital had been whispering about it.
How could a “bully like the Jacksons claimed her to be end up in the hospital over and over again, always wounded and. battered?
If she was the one constantly tormenting Agnes, why was she the only one ending up in a hospital bed, while Agnes remained unscathed?
Last time, she had been covered in whip marks, her pinky finger broken. This time, the back of her head had been smashed open, nearly costing her her life due to infection.
Michael suddenly recalled how Camila had desperately fled to Neelum City in the dead of night, trying to catch a train to Glares City.
It was obvious–she wanted nothing more than to escape the Jackson family, to get as far away from them as possible. Yet, both he and Harry had forcibly dragged her back.
At the time, he had been completely biased toward Agnes, treating Camila with utter contempt.
It was only afterward that he realized–Carmila had been so utterly disillusioned with the Jackson family that she would rather run away than stay.
And now, she was missing again. Most likely, she had been pushed past her breaking point.
Michael was so lost in thought that he didn’t even hear Harry speaking to him.
“Michael?” Harry called.
Michael snapped back to reality. “What?”
“Where do you think Camila could’ve gone? Could she have escaped to another city again?” Harry’s brows were tightly furrowed.
Michael responded absentmindedly, “Maybe.”
“Camila has no money, she’s sickly and weak. What if she runs into danger out there? Why is she so stubbom? Why can’t she just talk things out with her family instead of always causing trouble-
Listening to Harry’s endless complaints, and recalling how he had described yesterday’s incident–Emily waking up and nearly being strangled–Michael couldn’t help but want to tell him to shut up.
Emily had already admitted that Camila wasn’t the one who pushed her down the stairs five years ago. Her waking up could only be a good thing for Camila. So why the hell would Camila want to kill her?
The answer was obvious.
Even if Michael didn’t want to admit it, the truth was undeniable
And he knew Harry wasn’t stupid–he had definitely figured it out, too. He just didn’t want to face it. He was deliberately turning a blind eye, covering for someone. And yet, he had the nerve to say Camila was “causing trouble“?
If Michael were in Camila’s shoes–framed by his own brother, wrongfully imprisoned for five years–he’d probably want to kill someone too.
No wonder Camila wanted to escape. The Jackson family had always treated her and Agnes with a blatant double standard.
And Michael himself… he had been just as blind. For years, he had held deep biases against Camila, speaking to her with nothing but cruelty every time they met. And now? Now he realized–he had been nothing more than a pawn. He had been used.
Worse, he had followed orders without question, attacking exactly where he was directed–like a complete idiot
From the corner of his eye, Michael caught ag Successfully unlocked! m’s glass window. Inside, Arthur was comforting a teary–eyed Agnes, his face full of.
tly
Michael’s expression darkened instantly. Arthur was a fool. He had a real daughter but never cared for her. Instead, he was doting on a foster daughter like she was the most precious thing in the world.
“I have work to do. I don’t have time for this” Michael muttered, tuming on his heel and walking away without looking back.
Chapter 24
But instead of heading to his office, he made his way to the hospital’s security room
Emily’s VIP room had surveillance cameras for medical observation purposes. He wanted to check the footage from last
night
Yet, when he accessed the system, the screen flashed with a message: “Video file has been deleted.”
Michael’s eyes turned ice–cold.
He frowned and tried to pull up the hallway footage instead, hoping to see Camila and Agnes entering Emily’s room
But that video had been erased too.
His expression grew even darker.
The hospital’s surveillance system was tightly secured–most staff members weren’t even authorized to access it. As a senior doctor at Mercy Hospital, he was one of the few who had clearance
Whoever had deleted those files wasn’t just any ordinary staff member
Someone was helping the real culprit cover their tracks.
Michael’s gaze sharpened. It seemed like he needed to ask Emily directly.
He made his way to her hospital room and knocked softly before pushing the door open.
Emily was lying motionless on the bed, staring blankly at the ceiling. Michael approached, checking her vitals. She didn’t react to him at all. He sighed and changed the subject. “I know what happened last night.”
Emily remained silent, unmoving.
“Don’t you want the real culprit to be brought to justice?” Michael asked.
Of course, she did.
But last night, she had seen everything clearly–Arthur, Belinda, Harry, Owen, even William. They had all chosen to protect Agnes.
They had gone out of their way to silence her, ensuring she never spoke the truth.
Agnes was so important to them–important enough that Emily’s suffering, and Camila’s five years of wrongful imprisonment, meant nothing.
Michael had always been close to the Jackson family. He was probably no different from them.
Emily remained silent, like a lifeless doll.
Michael tried again and again to persuade her, but she remained completely unresponsive.
Her stubborn refusal to engage frustrated him to no end.
Then, he said, “Camila is missing.
For the first time, Emily’s dull, lifeless eyes flickered with emotion–like a knife had stabbed straight through her heart. Michael caught the tiny change in her expression and felt a surge of hope.
You know what they’ll do to her once they
He pressed on. “The Jackson family, Owen, and William are all looking for her. You find her.”
Emily’s body tensed. Images of last night–Camila being beaten and humiliated–flashed in her mind. Her throat trembled, and choked, wordless sounds escaped her lips. Tears slid silently down her cheeks.
Michael gently wiped her tears away. “Don’t cry. Things will get better.”
Once she had calmed down, he said softly, “Focus on recovering. Once you’re well again, you can help bring the real culprit to justice.”
After comforting her a little longer he finally left the room.
But he wasn’t going back to his office–he was heading to Healthcare Hospital.
As he pulled out of the parking garage, his eyes caught sight of two figures standing nearby.
Coincidentally, he recognized them both. One was Ivanna Vazquez, the director of their hospital. The other was Agr
personal driver–he couldn’t remember the man’s first name, only that his last name was also Vazquez
Michael frowned. Why were those two together?”
