Inside the Watson mansion, James continued to hover around Emma.[]
“Sis, you’ve finally come back after so long. Are you sure you don’t want me to take you out somewhere?“[]
Emma sighed helplessly.
Her interactions with James weren’t actually that extensive. Because of his adoption, his identity had always been kept secret. Plus, they attended different schools, so their shared memories were limited to their childhood. She didn’t understand what James saw in her, especially considering they were siblings.
She turned and pushed James away]
“James, I know you’re managing most of the family business now. You must be busy–don’t feel obligated to come back. I’ve come to terms with everything.“/
Her rejection didn’t upset him; he simply pulled out a chair.
“The company has assistants for daily matters; it’s no big deal. Now that you’re finally back, I want to spend more time with you. I know you can’t accept me right now, but could you see me as more than just a brother?”
James spoke so earnestly that Emma felt slightly embarrassed. She sat down in the chair he offered and couldn’t help asking:]
“James, what exactly do you like about me? We haven’t seen each other in years.“[]
After learning about her divorce, her parents hadn’t even commented yet, but James had rushed over immediately.
Originally, she assumed their relationship was purely familial, but James’s sudden declaration of love–with their similar adopted status and sibling relationship–made Emma initially resistant. However, James’s persistence made her curious.
James reminisced, a smile slowly forming on his lips.
“Sis, do you remember when I was first adopted into the Watson family? Everyone looked down on me. Only you patiently taught me proper etiquette, how to eat properly, how to handle adults‘ scrutiny. Later, when I was sent away, the Watson family’s attitude toward me was always hands–off. Only you genuinely cared about my well–being.”

Those memories gradually surfaced, and Emma had never realized her kindness had meant so much to him.
“But I only have sisterly feelings for you… Even though we’re not blood–related, you now manage the family business. We couldn’t possibly be together.”

James smiled dismissively and sat beside Emma, his voice deepening.[]
“The Watson family business has never meant more to me than you. If you’re willing and have the courage, I can give up everything. I know you can’t accept me now, but let’s spend time together and see how it goes. If you truly feel nothing for me, I won’t cling to you like Marcus did.“[]
“I’ll be sensible and quietly disappear. I’ll still manage the company well and earn money for you, Sis, just give me a chance?”
His tone softened, suddenly resembling the boy from her memories, making Emma smile gently.
If Marcus could be with his sister, why couldn’t she try with her brother?
With mixed emotions, Emma agreed. James’s eyes first lit with joy, then quickly composed himself, though his excitement remained evident.
“Sis, I’m not joking. Come with me–when you see what I have to show you, you’ll understand. I hope you’re also seriously considering this.”
With that, he led her step by step to a room on the second floor that had never been opened before.
James gestured for her to open it, his gaze gentle. Emma somehow knew what she’d find when she opened the door, yet her hand moved of its own accord
Inside, the contents nearly took her breath away–photos of her were everywhere.[]
From childhood to adulthood, even labeled with what she was doing at the time
At eight, she saw herself teaching James how to use cutlery.
At ten, happily riding on young James’s back, arms around his neck.
At twelve, her eyes red as they parted.

In the traces of her growth afterward. James no longer appeared, but he had clearly kept track of her.
Those childhood memories were like old photographs, unveiling her dust–covered past.
She realized how close she and James had been before she ever met Marcus.]
The now–mature man stood beside her and spoke softly.
“Sis. I’ve been watching over you all these years. Thankfully, I’ve waited for you. Will you give me a chance?”
After these days together, Emma could see James’s genuine care for her, and she couldn’t deny feeling touched. Yet everything seemed too dreamlike. They were siblings, family. Being together could come at a tremendous cost. She wondered if this might be another trap. Being a cautious person, she was afraid to gamble her future.
But James’s honest, intense gaze burned into her heartbeat, and after a long moment, she nodded slightly.[]
“Okay.”
With that single word, James’s eyes lit up.
