Chapter 3
Seeing me break down in tears only made Nathan more annoyed.
His face twisted with disgust, like I was some burden he couldn’t wait to shake off.
Sensing the tension, Sarah walked in and reached for
my arm.
I yanked it away, again.
Nathan clenched his jaw, eyes practically shooting sparks.
“Don’t touch her! Look at the way she’s acting!”
“You were out partying while Sarah stayed back and helped with our son.”
“And what, now you’re mad at her?”
“You think the world owes you something?”
“So why’d you even come back? Just to stir up more drama?”
“Why didn’t you just die out there?”
That last part? That killed something in me.
You can’t expect sympathy from someone who doesn’t love you.
It’s pointless.
I nodded, numb.
“Once you sign those divorce papers, I’ll be out of your life.”
“You’ll never have to come up with another lame excuse about where you were all night.”
Nathan ran a hand through his hair, frustrated and frantic.
“I’ve told you a million times–I don’t want to go through this again.”
“But this time it’s about you!”
“You disappeared for two weeks!”
“Two weeks, Olivia!”
“You left me and our son with zero explanation, and now you’re trying to flip the script?”
“He just started school, and you want a divorce?”
“What kind of mother are you?”
“What kind of partner were you?”
“If you didn’t want a family, why the hell did you get married? Why have a kid!”
“I’ve been juggling work and parenting alone for weeks, I’m losing my damn mind, and now you show up just to make everything worse?”
Ai
I stared at him, this version of him that was unraveling–and all I could think was, what a joke.
“Nathan, don’t get mad.”
Sarah played her part, all wide eyes and trembling voice, stepping closer to Nathan like
a
helpless little dove.

“Even though Olivia keyed my car and ran off, she still deserves a chance to explain.”
Then she turned to me, sweet as poison.
“Olivia, honey, the whole thing was caught on camera.”
“I showed Nathan the footage, and he still tried to cover for you.”
“But you?”
“You were out blowing money on some other guy, and Nathan kept getting those bank notifications.”
“How am I supposed to defend that?”
I didn’t even let her finish.
I slapped her right across her perfectly made–up face.
