Chapter 5
I pushed myself up, fighting through the pain.
I lunged toward Sarah, trying to grab my son back.
Liam burst into tears.
Sarah turned, shielding him like she was some goddamn saint.
“Olivia, please! He just calmed down–you’re scaring him again-”
Before she could finish, I slapped her. Hard.
“You don’t get to parent my son.”
“Say one more word to him, I swear to God I’ll tear you apart.”
“I already died once.”
“You think I’m scared of anything anymore?”
Nathan kicked me hard in the back.
I lost my balance and fell forward again.
My shirt slipped down, revealing the long, angry scar.
Just then, my phone slid out of my pocket and started to ring.
Nathan didn’t even blink.
His eyes were glued to my shoulder like he’d never seen it before.
His stare made the wound feel like it was burning.
The ringing finally stopped–only to start again.
I reached for it through the pain, but Nathan snatched it first.
“What, your side piece can’t wait more than ten minutes to check in?”
“Swiping my card, sleeping
with
my wife–let’s see who he is.”
He slammed the call onto speaker.
A voice came through the line, frantic.
“Miss Olivia? Where are you?”
“You need to change your dressings today.”
“It’s only been two weeks since the car accident.”
“Your wounds aren’t healed yet, especially the internal injuries.”
“If you don’t rest, this could kill you!”
