Chapter 8
When I opened my eyes again, I was lying in a private room at the hospital.
Nathan was right by my side, looking like he hadn’t slept in days.
As soon as he saw me awake, he leaned in, all worried and frantic.
“Are you okay? Do you feel sick anywhere?”
“You want some water?”
“You hungry? I can grab you something.”
He rushed to call the doctor, panicking like I was made of glass.
The whole scene felt… surreal.
Like a dream I didn’t remember falling into.
And for a split second, it took me back.
That night–I’d had a crazy fever and passed out.
He’d carried me down four flights of stairs, couldn’t find a cab.
So he ran.
Two damn miles. With me in his arms.
I remember barely coming to on the way there,
and seeing his whole body drenched in
His hair was soaked, forehead dripping.
Slike he was glowing.
And somehow, those drops had fallen straight into my heart.
When we finally got to the ER, he handed me over to the doctors and collapsed on the floor.
When I woke up, his arms were stiff, but he was still sitting there,
just waiting-
Asking if I was okay.
If I needed water.
If I was hungry.
Calling in the doctor again, just to be sure.
That was ten years ago.
But the sharp, pulsing pain in my body reminded me exactly where I was now
The Nathan I once loved?
That guy had been gone a long time.
And now he was suddenly gentle again? After everything?
I should’ve felt grateful.

Should’ve felt comforted.
But all I could think was-
He’s buzzing around like a damn mosquito.
Annoying as hell.
I frowned and snapped, “Get out.”
Nathan’s expression crashed from hopeful to totally lost.
One of the doctors walked in and saw the look on my face.
He glanced at Nathan.
“This guy really your husband?” he asked, half in disbelief.
I nodded, barely.
The doctor exchanged a look with the others, and suddenly,
they all looked at me like I was some kind of tragic case.
They knew me here.
The nurses, especially Garcia, had seen me lying alone in this hospital bed for over two weeks with no one checking in.
When they spotted Nathan, they just shook their heads.
“The patient’s family should step out.”
“We need to run some tests and give her some rest.”
Nathan looked relieved, honestly, like he was waiting for a reason to leave.
He bolted out the door like the building was on fire.
