Chapter 39
It had been months and Benjamin hadn’t gotten any closer to finding Dora. He had even called Royce, who didn’t remember her, but said that she might have paid with a card.
Benjamin walked into his office. “Sorry I took so long,” he said to the woman who was sitting at his desk. She turned on him and he swallowed. She looked
like his Dora.
‘She is too pale,‘ his mind argued. ‘If she is pregnant… it can’t be.‘
“Hi,” she whispered as she stood up.
He noted that her voice was similar but not the same. He picked up her paperwork, seeing she had filled out her medical history, but her husband’s name had been left blank. He would have to make a note to ask him at their next appointment, but that information was not as important as hers at that stage.
He ran through some of the information and questions. He noticed she didn’t correct him when he said Mrs. Leonard, but she checked single. He figured she was newly married. Once they were done, he asked her to move to the examination room.
There, he drew her blood and then got her to lie down so that he could examine and then scan her. During the exam, he asked a few questions about her husband, such as his height, She answered him and he moved on to the more abrasive exam.
It was clear to him she was turned on. It was not common, but had happened in the past. However, it was the first time he was turned on, too. It was such a surprise, he was barely able to wrap it up to do the scan.
As he proceeded to insert the scan inside of her, he found out just how turned on she had become. It only stopped him for a few seconds before he carried on, only finding that she was embarrassed, and therefore, shying away from him.
He had to almost force her to look at the screen so that she could see the baby.
“What’s that?” she asked.
“That’s the baby’s heartbeat,” Benjamin told her, grinning.
“Really, my little bean has a heartbeat?” she asked him with a twinkle in her eye.
“Yes, would you like to hear it?”
She nodded at him and he switched it on, but the sound tugged at his own heart, like it never had before. She exclaimed and he found himself worrying, not sure what had bothered her.
The following conversation made him worry. The pain was clear on her face, making him feel weak and scared. He asked her to get dressed and meet him at his office before rushing out of the room.
*Please, God, don’t let her lose Bean,” he said over and over again. He was not sure why it would kill him—he just knew that it would. And that was nothing compared to what the loss would do to her, and that scared him too.
“Time to act like a doctor again,‘ he reminded himself firmly.
It had been a week since he saw Pandora, and she and the babies had become his favorite patients. He loved seeing the babies on the screen and more so, he loved seeing Pandora. His attachment to all of them had grown.
“Where is Pandora?” he asked the woman at the reception when he saw she was not in the sitting room.
“She hasn’t turned up.”
He frowned and moved back to his room. He grabbed his jacket and bag and headed over to her house. He had become overwhelmed with the feeling that she or one of the boys was hurt.
It was not the first time he had been worried about her. Two months ago, she was very ill and came to get an injection. He arrived just in time to catch her as she fainted. Her useless husband was a no–show, and he had to drive her to the hospital, not that he minded. They found out that part of the reason she had been so sick was that she was expecting twins.
Later on that day, Benjamin found out the other reason… her husband.
He arrived but was verbally abusive to her. Then his mother showed up and ripped right through Pandora, and it was clear this was where her stress was

coming from. The stress was only adding to how sick she was.
He was so wound up that later in the week he forgot the family lunch to celebrate Maisey’s birthday. As soon as he got Pandora sorted, he called Maisey to arrange a night out for just the two of them.
Of course, Pandora just happened to be there, and he spilled to Maisey about his attachment to her and her babies. It turned out, Maisey was already clued in when Ben’s eyes stayed on Pandora the entire time she and her friends were singing.
Then just the week before, she had an appointment, the last appointment of the day and he ended up following her home. Thankfully, she didn’t know it was him, due to the fact he was on his motorcycle, but he couldn’t help but feel like she was checking him out at the traffic lights.
He parked outside her home, seeing her car parked in her driveway. He moved to the door, knocking on it.
He heard a thud coming from inside the house.
“Pandora, it’s Benjamin,” he yelled.
A few minutes later, she opened the door, looking paler than he had seen her in a while. She was wet and looked worn out.
‘What the hell is going on here?‘ he screamed in his head.
