It was laughable.
Halfway through the banquet, Tyler’s mother suddenly announced:
“Thank you all for attending this old woman’s birthday celebration. I have wonderful news to share. My Tyler and Olivia have been childhood sweethearts with perfect chemistry. Now that Olivia has returned from abroad, we will
hold their engagement ceremony in three days. You are all welcome to attend at that time!”
The guests offered their congratulations, though someone asked curiously:
“But I heard Tyler already has a girlfriend?”
Tyler’s mother’s face darkened as she snorted:
“Some poor nobody trying to climb up to our family’s status? My Tyler was just playing around with her. Did she really think she would turn the gutter sparrow to golden swan? She should know her place!”
“Tyler, don’t you agree?”
Tyler remained silent for a moment, then smiled faintly:
“Mother is right. She’s just a gutter sparrow. Let’s do as you say.”
I looked up in shock to see Olivia gleefully throwing herself into his arms.
Next second, Tyler took out a massive diamond ring he’d obviously prepared in advance, slipped it onto her finger, and amid the crowd’s cheers, tenderly kissed her fingertips.
I saw that ring on TV a few days ago. It was the latest pink diamond ring launched by Harry Winston, and it was
worth 50 million dollars.
I glanced at the ordinary, now yellowed plastic ring on my own finger. Tyler had given it to me on our first
anniversary.
It was so cheap, just a few dollars, but I had been so happy, like a fool. Even though it wasn’t proper for my finger, I
couldn’t bear to take it off.
I hid in a corner like a voyeur who shouldn’t see the light of day, watching them hold hands and smile as they drank toasts from the guests.
Though the drinks were meant for both, Tyler intercepted them all for Olivia, then handed her a glass of juice, saying tenderly:
“You’re allergic to alcohol. Drink this instead.”
Olivia leaned on his shoulder like a pampered princess, shy yet happy:

“Tyler, you’re so good to me.”
Tyler used to claim his “fragile stomach” couldn’t tolerate a drop of alcohol–skipping every gathering with friend
For five years, I studied digestive health like a med student, brewing herbal teas and cooking bland mests
Now?
He’s downing shots for someone else without a second thought.
Maybe there was never any stomach condition at all.
Just a condition called “I wasn’t worth meeting his friends.”
Tyler must have been extremely happy today.
Soon he was drunk, and Olivia helped him up to the guest room upstairs.
I knew leaving would be the wise choice, but before I realized it, I was standing outside their door.
The door wasn’t fully closed, and intimate sounds drifted out.
With trembling hands, I called Tyler’s phone. It took nearly fifteen seconds before he answered.
Tyler’s voice was hoarse, his breathing heavy:
“Emma, what’s wrong?”
“Tyler, let’s get married,” I sobbed. “I don’t need anything but you. Just come back now, and we’ll go get our marriage license right away, okay?”
I knew how pathetic and undignified I was but love sometimes made you abandon all your self–respect
If only he would stop now.
If only he would come out.
If only he would return to me immediately.
I could pretend none of this had happened…
Tyler was silent for a moment, then laughed helplessly:
“Silly girl, why are you crying? I never said I wouldn’t marry you.”
“But my mother is still in the hospital. I’m not in the mood for marriage right now, and I don’t want to short–change you. When my mother gets better and I earn more money to buy you a nice ring. I’ll marry you properly. Be patient and wait a little longer for me.”
“My part–time job will probably keep me busy until very late tonight, so I won’t be coming home. Remember to lock the door and wait for me. I’ll bring you something desserts when I return.”

He suddenly let out a suppressed groan and quickly hung up.
At the same time, the sounds from the room grew more intense and unbearable.
I numbly lowered my phone, allowing tears to fall.
On my way back, torrential rain began to fall, washing my face over, mixing with my tears,
I suddenly felt so tired, and my head grew heavier.
Before losing consciousness on the ground, a thought came into my mind:
Tyler, I won’t wait for you obediently, anymore.
