He Ran After Her, I Ran From Him 3

Chapter 3

I pushed open the door to the CEO’s office.

Two figures instantly sprang apart.

Alexander’s breathing was uneven, his face darkening as he looked at me.

“What are you doing here?”

Then, his tone softened as he turned to the woman beside him.

“Chloe, go make us some coffee.”

She scurried out, clearly flustered.

The room fell into heavy silence.

He waited for me to speak first.

I pulled a folder from my bag and held it out to him.

“You haven’t opened your gift from yesterday.”

He raised an eyebrow, a little thrown.

“You’re not gonna ask?”

“No.”

He paused, studying me. There was something in my composure that clearly unsettled him.

After a beat, he muttered, almost defensively,

“She’s been clinging to me lately. So I let her pretend to be my secretary.”

In the past, that line would’ve set me off.

I would’ve demanded, “And what does that make me?”

But now… nothing. No reaction.

Just silence.

I calmly extended the folder again.

Alexander’s gaze flickered, curious now. He took it slowly, eyes still fixed on me as he opened it.

Seconds later, his expression shifted.

Shock.

Then disbelief.

Then, something like hope.

“You’re… pregnant?”

My stomach dropped.

Wait, what?

I looked down and realized,

I gave him the wrong folder.

The pregnancy test results.

I meant to give him the divorce papers.

Just as I opened my mouth to explain, there was a sudden crash at the door.

Chloe.

She’d dropped the coffee tray, cups shattered everywhere.

She stared at us, wide-eyed, face twisting into a mix of jealousy and panic. Then she turned on her heel and bolted.

Alexander cursed under his breath, shooting me a glance.

“Wait here.”

Then he ran after her.

But I wasn’t going to wait anymore.

Not after four years of this marriage.

Four years of waiting for his name to pop up in a new scandal.

Waiting for late-night texts from strangers flaunting their affairs.

Waiting for gossip, for pity, for friends to look at me with eyes full of concern or judgment.

Waiting for him to choose me.

The one thing I never got to wait for was him changing.

And now?

I was done.

Tears blurred my vision as I turned away.

I walked out of that office and got into a cab.

Destination: the hospital.
