Chapter 4
I never expected to run into them again, at the hospital.
There they were: the pair of lovebirds.
Chloe’s palm was wrapped in layers of bandages, cradled gently in Alexander’s arms.
The sight made my stomach churn.
Alexander froze as soon as he saw me, his eyes narrowing as he took me in.
“What are you doing here? Didn’t I tell you to wait for me?”
His voice turned colder.
“Or did you follow us?”
I almost laughed. The audacity. I wanted to tell him I hadn’t followed them, that I was here for an abortion, but I stopped myself. The last thing I needed was him trying to stop me.
But Alexander took my silence as confirmation.
He opened his mouth, a mocking smile already forming.
Then Chloe tugged at his arm, interrupting him with a sweet smile.
“Let’s not fight, okay? Can you go get me some medicine first? Please?”
Alexander hesitated, then nodded and walked off.
Chloe turned to me, her smile sweet but the challenge clear in her eyes.
“Mrs. Wood, I’m so sorry to interrupt,” she said with an exaggerated sincerity. “But I just wanted to ask…”
She flashed her bracelet in my face.
“Do you like the ring I picked out for him? Oh, and I’ve got one too. It’s worth $20,000.”
The knot in my stomach tightened.
I had thought that ring was just something Alexander casually had someone grab for me.
But now, I understood. He had given it to her to humiliate me.
I steadied myself, meeting her gaze with a calm smile that barely masked the anger inside me.
“Miss White,” I said slowly, “do you know what the real difference between us is?”
She blinked, caught off guard. I continued.
“The things he gives me? Those are marital property.”
I leaned in slightly, voice lower but sharper.
“Everything he gives you? You’ll be paying it back one day.”
Her smile faltered. The tension in the air was palpable.
The next second, Chloe stormed off, face flushed with rage.
