Chapter 10
The Thompson family had been bleeding me dry for years, and now they were putting on a show to scam money for Jack’s surgery.
Now that Jack was really sick, I couldn’t help but think this was just karmic retribution for everything they’d done.
Why was I the one being blamed?
Jack cheated on me and wanted to transfer all our money to his mistress. I was just protecting my own interests. What did I do wrong?
After I’d calmed down for about half an hour, I pulled out my phone, ready to call the police and let them deal with everything.
But as soon as I unlocked it, notifications flooded in, news updates, one after another.
Reporters were livestreaming from outside Jack’s operating room, capturing every moment.
In the hallway, Mrs. Thompson and Uncle Thompson were wailing, their cries echoing down the corridor.
They didn’t hold back, cursing me as a heartless, ungrateful beast.
Olivia, the medical professional, wasn’t tending to her own patients. Instead, she was hanging around by the door, acting as if she was comforting Mrs. Thompson, all for the cameras.
Her gentle, virtuous demeanor made me look even worse in comparison.
Of course, netizens traced Olivia’s account and found out she was my best friend.
Immediately, I was hit with a tidal wave of vicious comments.
“Even her friend couldn’t stand by and had to step in. Amy must be a terrible person!”
“If only the Thompson family had married Olivia instead of Amy, none of this would have happened. Maybe Jack wouldn’t have even gotten sick!”
“Exactly! Look at how she takes care of her friend’s husband’s family, this is what a good woman does! Amy’s completely disgraced women everywhere. Someone like her deserves to get run over!”
Olivia’s account skyrocketed with millions of new followers, turning her into the latest internet celebrity.
During Jack’s surgery, she posted video updates to comfort her new fans.
In the video, she spoke softly, reassuring everyone not to blame me for my mistakes. She said I was just confused, that I used to be a good girl.
The more she “defended” me, the angrier netizens got.
On the surface, she seemed to be pleading for mercy on my behalf, but in reality, every word was just stoking the fire.
The video went viral, shared millions of times in an instant.
My account was flooded with hate comments, so much so that it was eventually banned. Every post I’d ever made was taken down by the platform.
After two hours of emergency treatment, the doctor came out and declared Jack dead.
Mrs. Thompson fainted right there in the hallway.
Olivia took it upon herself to sign Jack’s critical condition notice as a “family member.”
Despite it being against hospital regulations, in the eyes of the public, she was seen as the hero, the righteous one, the kind soul who stepped up when I didn’t.
