couldn’t. Not yet. Not when weid only just begun to heal the rift between us,
I left my mother with a quick hug and headed back. My mind still buzzing with thoughts of my mothers last words, when a familiar voice called out behind me.
1 froze, every muscle tensing at the sound. Without turning, I know actly who it was.
“Stay away, Rowan,” I warned, continuing to walk. The last thing I needed was another confrontation with the wolf who’d nearly killed me.
He persisted, following me down the corridor. “Please, I really need to speak with you…”
I whirled around, anger flaring. “Why? So you could tell me some shifty story about your life and deceive me? Not thank you,”
“Please. His voice had lost the arrogance I remembered. He looked smaller somehow, his shoulders hunched, eyes downcast.
“If you keep following me, I’ll have a change of heart and maybe place you in the dungeons
where yo
ne you belong.”
“I am not here for that… is just that, he hesitated, glancing around at the empty corridor. “Can we go somewhere private?”
I almost laughed at the absurdity of his request. “Alone with you? Nice try darling.”
Rowan sighed, his hands fidgeting at his sides. “Okay. I just wanted to thank you… I don’t know why you did it, but… I hadn’t been thinking, I am so sorry for what I did, and my sister wouldn’t be happy with what I did. I had to talk to you and get it off my chest, I am so sorry, and if there is anything you would ever need me to do, I would do it.……..”.
Before I could respond, a cold voice cut through the air.
“Elowen.”
I turned to see Frost approaching, his ice–blur eyes fixed on Howan with unmistakable hostility.
Frost,”
“I acknowledged, relief washing over me despite myself.
Rowan retreated immediately, disappearing down the corridor with another word.
“So won’t you yell at me for letting him that close?” I asked once Rowan was gone, trying to lighten the moment.
“You already knew you were wrong; that wouldn’t be necessary, but you seem to be a danger magnet; you can’t even walk on your own,” Frost replied, the faintest hint of amusement softening his typically stern expression.
“I can walk on my own; I knew I would be safe here,” I protested.
You will be safer without him close to you.” There was no arguing with that tone.
I studied Frost’s face, searching for something I couldn’t quite name Why do you bother?”
“Really Elowen? You do know I would feel at rest if I knew you were keeping out of trouble.” The concern in his valce seemed

genuine, making something Rhum unfurl in iny chest.
“You are right; I’m sorry. He had just been telling me how sorry he was and how he was going to try to make up: I fell into step beside Frist as we continued down the corridor..
“If he comes close to you again, then necessary measures would be biken. The threat was delivered casually, as if he were discussing the weather rather than potential violence.
We reached the dour to my chambers. Frost besitated, his hand on the doorknob.
I have to head back now,” he said, “Or do you need me to walk you to the room too?”
I rolled my eyes at his teasing. “No, of course not. 1ll… see you soo
When
I pushed open the door to the bedroom, the last person I expected to see was the one sitting casually on my bed.
“Lysandra,” I breathed, anger immediately replacing my momentary good mood.
