“Maybe because you hadn’t bothered to tell me about the plan. I know it was all intentional; you thought my little act would fool the elders even more, but I was worried sick Kaius, and you said nothing, but Lysandra knew about the plan. But then why wouldn’t she? She is stronger and better at everything, and, oh, there is also your Ancient Lover; I heard she also had a thing for you. Is like 1 am always left out on everything and no one cares how that makes me feel? I am always being used like the pawn, but I have feelings too, and you don’t seem to care. I feel like this is all one–sided; all I feel for you… you don’t feel the same, and you have every right to because I was the one who fell in love. You did warn that I would end up wanting more than bargained for, and that’s exactly what had happened. What is so painful is that you… can’t give anymore.”
I stopped, breathless, shocked by my own outburst. I hadn’t meant to lay myself so bare, to expose every raw and vulnerable part of
- me.
Kaius had gone still, his amber eyes fixed on me with an intensity that made me want to look away. But I forced myself to meet his gaze, to face whatever reaction would come.
“Did I make you feel this way?” His voice was quiet, controlled, but there was something beneath the surface–a current of emotion I couldn’t quite identify.
“Yes, every damn time.” My voice came out stronger than I felt.
He moved closer, his movements deliberate, almost predatory. I stood my ground, though every instinct urged me to retreat.
“I thought I feared nothing till I met you, Elowen. I fear the control you have over my mind. I fear how pleasing you… give me so much joy. You want to know how I feel about you? You are like an obsession I can never get tired of; you do not even know what you have, and I am damn lucky to have you. It’s you I want.”
His words landed like physical blows, each one stripping away another layer of doubt. But before I could respond, his gaze moved past me, narrowing as it fixed on something behind me. I turned to follow his gaze and felt my stomach drop.
My packed bag. The evidence of my planned escape, sitting there in plain sight.
“Is not what you think,” I said quickly, panic rising in my chest.
“And what do you think is on my mind?” A dangerous smile played at the corners of his mouth. “A game of catch would have been equally fun.”
“It… was a rash decision… I wasn’t really… thinking,” I stammered, backing away slightly.
“I would have gone after you if you ran.” The casual certainty in his voice sent a shiver down my spine–not entirely from fear.
“I don’t know what I was thinking; I thought you were avoiding me… I trailed off, unable to form a coherent excuse.
“Is alright, Elowen.” His expression softened marginally. “You are right, I should have told you I had a plan, and why I called Lysandra in was only because I needed to confirm if any of the elders had escaped.”
The change of subject caught me off guard. “Are they all dead?”
“I did recall one of them escaping; there is no way to know just how many died, everything had been hazy; what’s left of them is just the… ashes which had probably been blown away by the wind.” shadow passed over his face, there and gone so quickly might have imagined it.
I can’t believe you did it… I can’t believe you are alive.”
“You can feel me; that’s proof enough.” He took my hand, placing it against his chest where I could feel his heartbeat, strong and steady. I recalled promising you that I would come back to you; did you doubt me?”

I couldn’t lie, not when he was looking at me like that. “Yes. Yes, I doubted you.” I paused, taking a deep breath. “So what next?”
“My father would be buried in two days, and the same day would be thy crowning.”
That surprised me. “Wait. You want to be crowned the same day your father would be buried?”
“Yes, Elowen.”
“Why?”
A cold smile curved his lips. “It makes sense that the day he goes down, I’ll rise as the new king.”
The symbolism wasn’t lost on me, though it seemed unnecessarily dramatic even for Kaius. “How is the crowning done? Something tells me it won’t be as easy as just placing a crown on your head.”
“You are right, there is a ritual; nothing you should worry about, but again, what is a crowning ceremony without a crown?” There was something in his tone that suggested he was withholding information, but I decided not to press. We’d already had enough emotional revelations for one night.
He moved to a small cabinet near the bed, retrieving a bottle of deep red wine. “Wine?”
nodded, welcoming the change in mood. He poured two glasses, handing one to me before taking a slow sip from his own.
Setting his glass aside, he approached me slowly, his intent clear in the heat of his gaze. His fingers traced a path along my collarbone, featherlight and teasing.
“What are you doing?” I asked.
“You don’t know what it feels like to be starved for this so long.” His voice had dropped lower, a rumble that I felt more than heard. “You’ve become like some addiction to me, and without you, I face this… withdrawal symptoms.”
His hand slid lower, slipping beneath the fabric of my jeans. “Let’s check how ready you are.”
I gasped when he hooked my panties to the side, his fingers immediately pushing into me. My body responded instantly to his/ touch. The wine glass slipped from my fingers, but Kaius caught it with his free hand, setting it aside without breaking contact.
“You are perfect, Elowen, everywhere,” he murmured against my neck, his breath hot against my skin.
When he finally pulled away, I was breathless, my body aching for more. “Can you stand?” he asked.
I nodded, not trusting myself to speak.
“Take off the clothes.” It wasn’t a request but a command, delivered with the absolute authority of an Alpha.
I obeyed, my fingers fumbling with buttons and zippers under his intense scrutiny.
When I stood before him, completely bare, my nipples were visibly hard, and the wetness between my legs glistened, utterly exposed.
“Bend over the table.” He gestured to the nearby desk, his own clothing disappearing with an efficiency that spoke of his impatience.
I positioned myself as directed, the cool wood pressing against my heated skin. I heard him approach, felt his hands grasp my hips

with a possessiveness that sent a thrill through me.
“What am I to you?” he demanded, his voice thick with something primal and possessive.
“My Alpha, I responded without hesitation, the words feeling right in a way I couldn’t fully explain.
A growl of approval rumbled from his chest. “Fucking sexy. But I am your mate.”
His gaze dropped to my core, and his hand followed. Fingers brushed against my slick folds, testing the wetness already beading there. A satisfied grunt escaped him before he withdrew. He grasped his hardened length, the thick head pressing against my
entrance.
Then he pushed forward, sliding into my pussy.
That familiar, consuming pressure filled me, stretching me around him. Instinct took over, and I rocked my hips against him, meeting his rhythm and inviting him to plunge deeper…
