I clutched the DNA results to my chest as I hurried through the corridors of the pack house
my heart racing with anticipation.
I reached our chambers and paused only briefly before pushing the door open without knocking.
“Kaius, we need to talk!” I called out, stepping into the room.
The words died on my lips as I took in the scene before me. Thalia draped her sensuous curves across my bed. Kaius’s robe hung loosely around her, the fabric parting Just enough to expose the stark black lace of her bra and the thin string of a thong disappearing against her hip.
A cigarette dangled lazily from her fingers, her ageless beauty a sharp contrast to the act, seeming to mock me as her lips curved into a slow, triumphant smile.
“Elder Thalia, what are you doing here?” My voice came out strangled, barely audible.
She took a long drag from her cigarette, exhaling the smoke in my direction. “What does it look like?”
The world tilted beneath me. I gripped the doorframe to steady myself, the paper in my hand suddenly meaningless, All those hours of anxious waiting, the hope that had surged through me when I read the results–shattered in an instant by the unmistakable evidence before me.
“Don’t be hard on yourself; he is the Alpha King: you should get accustomed to this, and you were not hurt in the process, Thalia
said, her voice dripping with false sympathy.
I stared at her, unable to form words past the crushing weight in my chest. The robe hung open just enough to reveal the curve of her breast, the smoothness of her thigh. She wore Kaius’s scent like a trophy.
“Do you have a message to leave for him?” she asked, examining her nails with deliberate casualness.
“No. No, I don’t.” I backed away, the test results crumpling in my fist.
I didn’t remember exactly how I got back to Frost’s room. The corridors passed in a blur, faces swimming before me without registering. When I finally stumbled through his door, he took one look at me and knew.
“I told you not to go, Elowen. His voice was gentle, without accusation.
Rage surged through me, hot and cleansing after the numbness of shock. “You should have told me, ‘Elowen, he is in your room, fucking your worst enemy; now wouldn’t be the best time to tell him about the damned DNA results‘, then maybe I would have
understood!”
“I’m sorry.” He reached for me, but I stepped back, needing space to contain the fury that threatened to consume me.
“Why? This is not your fault; it is his… I am at fault here too; I fell for this man, knowing he would only hurt me.” I paced the room, the crumpled test results still clutched in my hand.
. being the king “I thought there was going to be a chance for the both of us, and maybe I was the fool for thinking that. I knew would change everything, but he promised me; he said he would be nothing like his father. The memory of those promises only fueled my anger.
Frost watched me with those steady ice–blue eyes, waiting until some of my fury had burned itself out before speaking. ‘Elowen, maybe he was only trying to get you off his mind; did you tell him about the DNA result?”
“No. He wasn’t there.” I laughed bitterly at the irony–I’d gone to tell him we weren’t siblings, only to find him in bed with another

woman.
“He is in his office in case-
“Frost, you don’t seem to understand me. I don’t want him to know about the results; you haven’t told him, right?” The idea formed suddenly, a vindictive impulse I couldn’t suppress.
“No. I wouldn’t.” Frost looked troubled by my tone.
“Then he would never find out.” I smoothed out the crumpled paper, folding it carefully before tucking it into my pocket.
“Elowen…” Frost began, concern evident in his voice.
“Stop, okay. If he could do this to me, then maybe this wasn’t just about the fact that we shared the same mother; he would always find a reason, an excuse, and I am sick and tired of mending things. don’t care anymore, and I would really appreciate it if you stopped talking about him for now.”
His expression softened. “You deserve better, Elowen, and I won’t mention his name again if that makes you feel better.”
“It will. Thank you, Frost.” I sank onto his sofa, exhaustion suddenly replacing the rage that had carried me this far.
We sat in silence for several minutes, Frost giving me the space I needed to process everything. Just as I was about to suggest we leave go anywhere that wasn’t here, that wasn’t within the same walls as Kaius and Thalia–a sharp knock came at the door.
“I don’t want to see him, Frost.” I knew instinctively who it was.
Frost nodded, moving to the door and opening it just enough to speak with whoever was outside. I heard the low murmur of voices -Frost’s calm but firm, the other unmistakably Kaius’s.
“Alpha… I am not sure she wants to see you right now,” Frost said, his voice carrying clearly now.
“Frost, let me in. I need to speak to her.” Kaius’s voice held an urgency I rarely heard.
“I’m sorry, I can’t. I might be your friend, but I would say it to you when you act like a jerk. Just stop hurting her already; make your decision and stand on it.” The boldness of Frost’s words surprised me–few dared speak to Kaius that way.
“You know I had to.”
“Not in the same room you share with her, that is disrespectful… Alpha.” Frost’s use of Kaius’s title sounded almost like an accusation.
“You are right. Could you let me make adjustments at least?”
There was a pause, then Frost stepped back, allowing Kaius to enter. turned away, refusing to look at him.
